LETTER TO MY FAVOURITE LEARNER.

Dear Jenny,

Today, I would like to tell you about a special sound in English called the Schwa. The Schwa is like a hidden superstar among all the sounds we make when we speak. It's not very loud or strong, but it appears in so many words that we use every day.

The Schwa is represented by the symbol /Ι™/ in written English, but don't worry too much about that. What's important is how it sounds. The Schwa is a very relaxed sound that we make when we're not stressing any particular syllable in a word. It's a bit like a short, neutral vowel sound.

Let's try an example together. Imagine the word "about." When we say it, we stress the second syllable and say it like "a-BOUT." But what happens to the first syllable? It becomes the Schwa sound. So instead of saying "a-BOUT," we say "uh-BUH-Ι™t." Can you hear how the first syllable has a softer, less pronounced sound? That's the Schwa!

The Schwa can appear in many different words, often in unstressed syllables. For example, in the word "banana," we stress the second syllable and say it like "buh-NAN-uh." The last and the first syllable has the Schwa sound.

Another cool thing about the Schwa is that it can be represented by different letters in words. It's like a secret disguise! Sometimes it's an "a" like in "around" (uh-ROWND). Other times it's an "e" like in "taken" (tay-KUHN). It can even be an "i" like in "pencil" (PEN-suhl). But no matter what letter represents it, it always has that relaxed, Schwa sound.

The Schwa is all around us, and now that you know about it, you'll start noticing it in so many words. It's like a little whisper in our speech, adding a touch of magic to the way we communicate.

I hope you found this introduction to the Schwa interesting. Keep listening for it in words and have fun exploring the hidden superstar of the English language!

Best regards,

Lighthouse

"Have you ever wondered why the English language has so many irregular spellings?

Well, it turns out that English is actually a melting pot of various languages, including Germanic, Latin, and French.

As a result, many words have been borrowed and adapted over time, resulting in a mishmash of spelling patterns.

For example, the word 'knight' used to be spelled 'cniht' in Old English, but over time the spelling changed to reflect its French origins.

Understanding the history of language and its influences can help us better understand the intricacies of English phonics.

What are some other words you know of that have irregular spellings? Share them in the comments below!"

Sure! Here are some pronunciation tips for English that you can use to improve your spoken proficiency.

1. Practice individual sounds: One effective way to improve pronunciation in English is to practice individual sounds. You can use online resources like the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) chart to learn the symbols and sounds of English, and then practice each sound individually using tongue twisters or other drills.

2 Focus on stressed syllables: In English, some syllables are stressed more than others. By focusing on the stressed syllables in a word or phrase, you can improve your overall pronunciation and clarity. You can use a dictionary or online resource to find out which syllables are stressed in a word, and then practice saying the word with the correct stress.

3. Pay attention to intonation: Intonation refers to the rise and fall of pitch in speech, and is an important aspect of English pronunciation. By paying attention to intonation patterns in English, you can convey different meanings and emotions in your speech. You can practice intonation by listening to and imitating native speakers, and by using intonation drills and exercises.

4. Slow down and enunciate: Many non-native speakers of English struggle with pronunciation because they speak too quickly or do not enunciate clearly. By slowing down your speech and focusing on enunciation, you can improve your overall pronunciation and clarity. You can also practice speaking at a comfortable pace and pausing between phrases to give yourself time to think and breathe.

5. Get feedback: Finally, it can be helpful to get feedback from native speakers or a speech coach to identify areas for improvement and receive personalized guidance and support. You can record yourself speaking and listen back to identify areas for improvement, or work with a tutor or coach to receive feedback and practice specific pronunciation skills.

Thank you, Jesus!

Exquisite elocution workshop with these fellows was aweeeeesome.

We learnt and unlearnt so many things.

The jokes, interactions, and tests were top-notch and most importantly useful to upscale our speaking proficiency.

There is no amount that could replace personal development.

Phonics training at X school is a succcccessss.

Yesterday, after an awesome worship experience at church (that kind that you'd have and your day already gets lightened, you know! )

I had a virtual meeting on Google Meet with some folks and I had to give my input as the meeting progresses.

So there is this Mr P who accused me several times of playing with his comprehension; according to him, he couldn't understand me, totally.

My way of speaking is rather strange that he could not decode my utterances. I smiled 😁, take a deep breath and started all over again, this time, with a decreased 'tenor' and slow pace, emphasizing all words individually.

At the end of the day, communication was achieved and I am glad I could make a 'Mr P' nod his head in comprehension.

That's why I'm writing this to you on this bright Monday morning.

You see, If you wish to speak good English, the sort of English that English people will understand readily, you must pay attention to two things, your pronunciation and the use of the right idioms.

All languages have two main classes of sounds --- vowels and consonants --- and it's very important to know them and be able to pronounce them correctly.

The most difficult sounds are, as a rule, the vowels, so we shall start with them. The English vowels have been called the 'flesh and blood of English speech covering the bony skeleton of its consonants'

There are no less than twelve pure, or single English vowel sounds, though there are only five letters, a e i o u to represent them.

That is one reason the way a word is spelt is no guide at all to its pronunciation.

For example, the following words are spelt differently but pronounced the same way: see and see.

The next two words are spelt the same way but are pronounced differently: bough, cough

As many African languages have only seven or eight vowels, this may mean that you will have to learn four or five new vowel sounds.

Here, to begin, is a pair of vowel sounds which are found in the two short words, 'sheep' and ship

Special shout-out to all mothers all over the world.

You're the reason for many good things in life.

Lighthouse appreciates all that you stand for.

From experience, I noticed that 80% of schools are either owned or managed by women.

This is a pointer to the interest mothers have for the budding generation.

So they devote their time and energy into making a generation that will succeed theirs.

Thank you to all mothers out there and intending mothers.

Happy mother's day to you all!

Eve taught the whole world that you don't abandon her, else she will bring all of us to doom.

Delilah taught us that if you need the mightiest man on earth use a woman.

Deborah taught her world that there is strength behind the thighs of a woman.

Mary showed us all that in God's divine purpose for the world at large, women are integral.

Moremj Ajasoro testified to the Yoruba kingdom that freedom can be bought with the surrender of a willing woman.

Susanna Wesley proved to the world that the power behind a praying woman can change the world.

Chimanmanda Adichie has shown us that the great power of muse visits the female kingdom, too.

And when you sit and ponder, bringing facts in parts, you glance at the rooster and the hen with their observable distinct size, watched the documentary and discover the lioness is typically between 4.6 and 5.7 feet, while the length of a lion is between 5.6 and 8.3 feet.

And then you begin to wonder why there is such a thing as the feminist movement claiming superiority or equality to the male folks.

*"Doth not even nature teach you?"*

A day like this is crucial in our world for recognising the superficial strength of the female folks, the combining strength with which she cooks, breastfeeds, wash the dishes and still speaks with her lover on the phone at the same time.

To all woman out there, I celebrate you all. You mean a lot to the world.

It's amazing how 90% of my clients are women and I have always had a smooth business relationship with them. 😁😁😁

I treasure what you represent in the sphere of Lighthouse Sr Lucy, Mrs Oguntade, Mrs Ogundeko, Mrs Onifade, Ms Edna.
