INSTRU-HEALTH: HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR INSTRUMENTS TO AVOID BREAKDOWN
It is another musical week again!
Your instruments are more than just tools; they're your creative partners, the voices that bring your musical visions to life. Just like any cherished companion, they need a little TLC to keep singing beautifully for years to come. So, grab some popcornand let's talk about Three essential ways to pamper your musical instruments.
1. Provide a Safe Haven
Think of your instrument's case as its cozy home. When you're not playing, make sure your instrument is tucked safely inside. This simple act shields it from dust, extreme temperatures, humidity fluctuations, and those accidental bumps and scrapes that can be a musician's nightmare. For delicate instruments like violins or guitars, consider investing in a hard case that offers superior protection.
2. Create the Right Environment:
Musical instruments, especially those crafted from wood, are sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. Extreme heat can warp wood, crack finishes, and even affect the glue holding things together. Similarly, drastic humidity swings can cause wood to expand and contract, leading to cracks or joint issues. Aim to store your instruments in a stable environment, away from direct sunlight, radiators, air conditioning vents, and damp basements. Consider using a humidifier or dehumidifier in your storage space if necessary, and for acoustic instruments, keep an eye on in-case humidifiers.
3. Regular Cleaning Rituals:
Dust and grime can accumulate on your instrument over time, not only making it look dull but also potentially affecting its playability and sound. Make it a habit to gently wipe down your instrument after each use with a soft, lint-free cloth. For stringed instruments, cleaning the strings regularly will prevent buildup that can dampen the sound and corrode the metal. For woodwind and brass instruments, regular internal cleaning is crucial to prevent the growth of bacteria and maintain proper airflow.
