While Bidding for Contracts
When you apply for contracts, whether with private organizations or government agencies, one of the first things they check is your documentation.
They want to confirm that your business is real, active, and operating legally. So before they even look at your proposal or your price, they will ask for:
Active CAC Status:-
This means your business must be properly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and showing as active on the CAC portal. An inactive or flagged status can disqualify you immediately, no matter how qualified you are for the job.
Up to Date Compliance Records:-
This includes your Annual Returns. Many business owners register their business and stop there, not knowing that CAC requires you to file returns every year to keep your business in good standing. If you have missed one or more years, your records will show it and that can work against you during verification.
The Problem most Business owners face
Many people only discover that something is wrong with their documents when they have already submitted their bid and are waiting for feedback. The verification fails, the opportunity closes, and they are left wondering what went wrong.
Frankly speaking, these issues did not happen overnight. They were there long before the bid, they just went unnoticed because nobody checked.
Another thing people overlook:-
Some business owners have made changes to their business over time, a new address, a change in business name, added or removed a director, changed their business activity but they never updated those changes on their CAC records.
So on paper, your registered business is still showing the old information. And when a contract issuer runs a verification, what they see on the CAC portal is different from what you have presented in your documents. That mismatch alone can raise a red flag and cost you the contract.
Whatever change has happened in your business, it needs to reflect on your CAC records too.
If you are not sure whether your Annual Returns are up to date, or you need to make corrections and updates on your registered business, this is your reminder to sort it out before the next opportunity comes.
