How To Process Cashew Nut For Export in Nigeria

Processing cashew nuts for export in Nigeria involves several stages, from harvesting to packaging and documentation. Below is a detailed step-by-step guide to help you understand the process:

1. Harvesting Cashew Nuts
- Timing: Harvest cashew apples and nuts when they are fully ripe (usually between February and May in Nigeria).
- Method: Hand-pick the cashew apples with the nuts attached or collect fallen nuts from the ground.
- Quality Control: Avoid damaged or immature nuts.

2. Separating the Nut from the Apple
- Remove the cashew nut from the cashew apple carefully.
- Discard the apple or use it for other purposes (e.g., juice production).

3. Drying the Cashew Nuts
- Purpose: Reduce moisture content to prevent spoilage during storage.
- Process: Spread the nuts in a single layer under the sun for 2-3 days.
- Moisture Level: Ensure the moisture content is reduced to about 8-10%.

4. Storage
- Store the dried nuts in a cool, dry place until ready for processing.
- Use jute bags or other breathable containers to avoid mold growth.

5. Roasting
- Purpose: Loosen the cashew shell and make it easier to remove the kernel.
- Process: Roast the nuts in a roasting machine or drum at a controlled temperature (180-200°C) for about 10-20 minutes.
- Caution: Cashew shells contain toxic oils, so ensure proper ventilation and protective gear during roasting.

6. Shelling
- Purpose: Remove the outer shell to extract the kernel.
- Process: Use a manual or mechanical shelling machine to crack the shells.
- Care: Handle the kernels gently to avoid breakage.

7. Drying the Kernels
- Dry the shelled kernels in a dryer or under the sun to reduce moisture content further (to about 5%).
- This step ensures the kernels are stable for storage and export.

8. Peeling
- Remove the thin brown testa (skin) covering the kernel.
- Use a peeling machine or manually peel the kernels.
- Note: White, whole kernels fetch higher prices in the international market.

9. Grading and Sorting
- Grade the kernels based on size, color, and quality (e.g., whole kernels, broken pieces, etc.).
- Common grades include:
- W180, W210, W240, W320: Whole kernels (numbers indicate kernels per pound).
- Splits and Pieces: Broken kernels.
- Sort out discolored, shriveled, or damaged kernels.

10. Quality Control
- Test the kernels for moisture content, aflatoxin levels, and other quality parameters.
- Ensure compliance with international standards (e.g., USDA, EU standards).

11. Packaging
- Pack the graded kernels in airtight, food-grade packaging materials:
- Vacuum-sealed plastic bags (for small quantities).
- Cartons or metal tins (for larger quantities).
- Label the packages with product details, grade, and weight.

12. Documentation for Export
- Prepare the necessary export documents, including:
- Certificate of Origin.
- Phytosanitary Certificate.
- Commercial Invoice.
- Packing List.
- Bill of Lading.
- Export License (if required).
- Ensure compliance with the regulations of the importing country.

13. Logistics and Shipping
- Arrange transportation to the port.
- Choose a reliable shipping company to handle the export.
- Use refrigerated containers if necessary to maintain product quality.

14. Market Research and Buyer Engagement
- Identify potential buyers in the target market.
- Negotiate terms and conditions, including pricing, delivery, and payment methods.
- Build long-term relationships with international buyers.

Key Considerations:
- Quality Standards: Adhere to international quality standards to remain competitive.
- Sustainability: Implement sustainable farming and processing practices to appeal to environmentally conscious markets.
- Regulations: Stay updated on export regulations in Nigeria and the importing country.

By following these steps, you can successfully process and export cashew nuts from Nigeria. Cashew nuts are a high-value commodity, and proper processing and packaging can significantly increase their market value.
