This is more than a minor infection-control issue.

Puncturing through wet alcohol can cause haemolysis, produce discomfort and potentially interfere with certain tests.

The site should be allowed to dry completely before venipuncture unless the laboratory's validated procedure specifies otherwise.

Leaving the Tourniquet on for too long

Prolonged venous stasis can cause haemoconcentration, changing concentrations of proteins, cells and protein-bound analytes.

A specimen can therefore be collected correctly but still be analytically misleading.

A good practice is to release the tourniquet as soon as appropriate and avoid unnecessarily prolonged venous stasis.
