THE IMPERATIVE OF DIGITAL ECONOMY IN NIGERIA

It's happening right under our noses. Banks are spending more than ever on Fintech and E-commerce. The "Big 4":largest consulting companies in the world are scrambling to upscale and up-skill their digital technology services. The Federal Government released the digital economy strategic master plan years ago, with backup funding, and launching several digital Government platforms. Lagos State a few years ago launched the Lagos Innovates programme years ago, and is planning to launch the digital village initiative called "KITE." Their Art of Technology (AoT) conferences announced new funding and master plans for e-governance and digital technology as a whole.

Right under our noses, N600billion is probably passing through Remita payment platform every day. The digital payment platform, Opay is now regarded as a bigger financial platform than the traditional banks, even as AppZone and other innovative SaaS startups are raising $millions funding to scale up even further. Paystack founders scaled up and cashed out in hundreds of $millions. Flutterwave and Calendly are Nigerian owned billion dollar tech entities. The UK Techhub in Nigeria is pushing British investors to partner with Nigerian tech innovators. The size of the digital economy in Nigeria is already over $12.5 billion according to the World Bank. It is going to double in a few years. It is still the fastest growing sector of our economy.

This area of business doesn't really require the Government's heavy handed bureaucratic interference, though regulatory compliance must be enforced. Nigeria's digital economy sector needs disciplined innovators and sustainable investments. Digital technology will be the world's fastest industry for the foreseeable future. Policy makers must make this their daily imperative, e-governance, virtual education, telemedicine, cyber-security, smart cities, and robust e-commerce with the attendant growth in logistics operations.

Two years ago, the nation's first digital electoral social media platform debuted...WardChatâ„¢ It was my privilege to be invited to do the formal unveiling.

Some folks desire change, and others resist change... both for the same reason.

Change affects the status quo, benefitting the former, and emasculating the latter.

Founders, visionaries and transformational leaders are often referred to as "1st Class" leaders. This is me extrapolating from Plato's principles of Gold, Silver and Bronze personality types.

Those following them are then referred to as 2nd class, or silver leaders or managers. Typically, top leaders like to surround themselves with 1st class talents, and those who don't or won't are not classified in this category.

Their fear of being replaced or overshadowed discourages them from hiring or surrounding themselves with top tier talents.

Time for self reflection.

Nigeria's President Reforms of the Civil Service.

President Tinubu has made a decision to implement within 3 months, the public service reform recommendations made 12 years ago by a Committee Led by Mr Oronsaye, a former Head of Service.

It's a tall order, given many changes have already happened in the intervening period, and some of those changes require acts of parliament be rescinded and/or approved afresh.

However, for any of these to work in the medium and long term, there needs to be a drastic effort to change the corporate culture of the Civil Service. Changes in names and nomenclature and even downsizing will not change the culture of impunity and corruption.

Forex Crisis: The CBN can't fix what it doesn't control. Once you liberalise without first having mitigation plans, you get a run on the markets.

Budget deficit and deficit financing...the rule of thumb in implementing the budget since 2015.

Dwindling crude revenues due to under production and oil theft means even the little crude produced is already collateralised against the deficit financing.

There is no short or medium term fix. If you throw borrowed money at the economy to revamp it, you only get inflation...our people have elastic demand in their bloodstream, and debt grows.

The true answer is to cut the cost of governing. OPEX...slice and dice it. Attack waste, financial mismanagement and corruption. Review public office performance management and reward goal driven performance and punish a lack of it thereof.

Political culture means these are unlikely, but that is what true reform look like. Change the way we do Government business. This is what investors respond to...corporate culture, strategic leadership, and performance driven ethos.

Can it happen in 42 months? Sure...it all rests on LEADERSHIP.

"People may spend their whole lives climbing the ladder of success only to find, once they reach the top, that the ladder is leaning against the wrong wall." -Thomas Merton.

"If you do not want to be busy climbing the wrong ladder of success and being disappointed when you reach the top, take time to define your outcome." - E.T.

Renew your vision, and climb up the ladder resting on the correct wall in 2024.

Happy New Year and God's blessings, folks.
