Before you answer a single question, they’re already scoring you.
Most people spend weeks preparing what to say in an interview. Memorising answers, rehearsing responses, perfecting their CV. And then they walk into the room and lose points they didn’t even know were on the table.
Here’s the truth nobody tells you:
Recruiters are human. And humans form impressions fast. Within the first 10 minutes, before the “tell me about yourself” even lands, they’ve already picked up on your energy, your confidence, how you walked in, how you greeted them, whether you seemed like someone they’d want on their team.
What recruiters are actually noticing:
Your arrival energy — Did you walk in rushed and flustered or calm and intentional? That alone says something about how you handle pressure.
Your body language before you sit — Are you scrolling your phone nervously? Slouching? Or sitting upright, present, ready?
Eye contact and your first words — Not a stare-down, but genuine, grounded eye contact signals confidence. Your first words set the tone for everything after.
Whether you seem prepared — Did you research the company? Do you know why you’re there? It shows before you even open your mouth.
The interview doesn’t start when they ask the first question. It starts the moment you step through that door.
So next time you’re prepping, work on your answers. But also work on your entrance. Work on your stillness. Work on making every person in that building feel respected.
That’s what stands out. That’s what gets you remembered.
Save this for your next interview prep and share it with someone who needs to hear it.
