You know, many years ago, I was going to leave home for the first time (story for another day)... But it was for a good cause.

At the time, there were certain young people God had strategically placed in my life to mentor me. I went to them and informed them of my intention to leave home. Among the many advice, encouragement and prayers said that day (which I currently do not remember), I was given a book.

EVERY WOMAN by Derek Llewellyn Jones_.

This book stayed with me for years. Most of the things I know now as it relates to the subject, came from that book.

Every book has a message, but there are books that are written specifically with you in mind....and this one, is one of those.

I remember one cute client I was taking on home lessons.

A mutual friend had connected me with this family, and they contacted me to teach their son. The lessons started really well , and I did look forward to our meetings. Soon, this kid started to pull some stunts 😂😂

At first, he'd constantly ask to use the loo. Then he graduated to claiming he's sick or pretending to be asleep. As an only child, the Mom was quick to dance to his tunes. It wasn't about the money for me, and I knew I had to devise a means to get him to like our sessions.

So one time, I told him I didn't come to take classes with him. I wanted us to play games. I asked him to bring his game, and he got his scrabble. We spent the day playing it together and I let him win multiple times.

Soon, we adopted a reward system for our lectures and that improved his engagement and excitement.

Now, teaching online is a different ball game because there's no physical contact. Yes, there's an option to share the screen, but it doesn't fully guarantee attention and participation, and they certainly cannot be confined to a desk.

To "discipline" a child online or get your child to participate fully during our sessions, we:

📍We employ our in-session tactics.

📍 Positive Pivot

📍 We call for Backup.
There's so little we can do if we do not have the full support of the parents. Issues stemming from network glitch, late attention, illness, uneasiness, or constant disrespect, is something that requires parental alignment.

This is why we involve both parents and the kids in our learning process. Our dedication to invest and groom the next generation, cannot be done without the full support and endorsement of the primary caregivers.
