One thing stands out when I take classes on Instagram for Business and Brand Storytelling - PEOPLE VALUE THEIR INDIVIDUAL STORIES.
Our classes are super practical so when we go round the class to check people’s Instagram (Business) handles and advice some to change to something simpler, they take it personal.
Not because they don’t accept that simpler names are better, but they’re more attached to the story behind that name.
Who knows, it might have taken weeks for them to even get the name that you’re now telling them to change.
But one thing we also teach is to do what works FOR YOUR CUSTOMER, not you. Make life easy for them so you can become THE preferred choice.
I learn from everything and see that that’s really how life is - we’re all attached to our own stories and lives, but we should also consider others.
What works for them?
What makes them happy?
What encourages them?
People often say “that’s how I am” as an excuse not to change, but how you are might hurt others. How you speak, for example. Or how you act.
So, yes, our individual stories are important but let’s remember that they’re linked to our collective stories.
That way, we’re more willing to change and do what’s good for others as well! Not just ourselves.
I remember when my former boss complained about how I sent mails. He thought they “sounded” rude and I didn’t. But, I had to adjust so that it doesn’t keep offending him.
