• The log line was thrown into the water, and as the ship moved, the number of knots that passed through a sailor’s hands in a specific amount of time (usually 30 seconds) was counted.
• This count determined the ship’s speed in “knots.”

Why Knots?
• A knot is equal to one nautical mile per hour.
• Nautical miles are based on the Earth’s circumference and are more practical for navigation because they are tied to the planet’s geography (1 nautical mile = 1 minute of latitude = 1.852 kilometers).

Using knots allows for consistency and precision in maritime and aerial navigation, making it the standard unit for measuring speed at sea and in the air.

What is the Minimum Breaking Strength Required for Emergency Towing Arrangements on Ships? 🚢💪⚓

SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations, specifically Chapter II-1, Regulation 3-4, require emergency towing arrangements (ETAs) on certain ships, particularly tankers. ⛽ The minimum breaking strength requirements are outlined in associated IMO guidelines, primarily MSC.35(63) as amended by MSC.132(75).

For tankers of 20,000 tonnes deadweight and over, the requirements are:

For tankers of 20,000 tonnes deadweight and over but less than 50,000 tonnes deadweight: The towing components (pennant, chafing gear, fairlead, strongpoint) should have a working strength of at least 1,000 kN. 🔗

For tankers of 50,000 tonnes deadweight and over: The towing components should have a working strength of at least 2,000 kN. 🚀

It's important to note that "working strength" is defined as one half of the ultimate strength. This means the ultimate breaking strength would be double these values (2,000 kN and 4,000 kN respectively). 📊

These strength requirements apply to all relevant angles of towline, including up to 90 degrees from the ship's centerline to port and starboard, and 30 degrees vertically downwards. 📐

While the specific numerical values primarily apply to tankers, SOLAS also requires other ships (cargo ships and passenger ships) to have ship-specific emergency towing procedures based on existing arrangements and equipment on board. For these ships, the strength of the towing arrangements must be "adequate, taking into account the size and deadweight of the ship, and the expected forces during bad weather conditions," with their design and testing approved by the Administration based on IMO guidelines. 🚢💨
