You don't have to be related to donate a kidney.

You don't even have to know the person.

In the UK you can donate a kidney to a complete stranger through the living kidney sharing scheme.

For Black patients who make up 12% of the waiting list but only 2% of deceased donors - a living donor who shares their ethnicity provides a tissue type match that the deceased donor pool currently cannot reliably offer.

A living donor. Same community. Same heritage. A match that changes everything.

At 2:30 in the morning, the phone rang.
It was the transplant coordinator.

She got up. She called her daughter. She didn't eat or drink as instructed.
She drove to the hospital in the dark.

And then the kidney was reallocated - a higher-scoring patient elsewhere in the country.

She drove home.

She has not talked about that night with anyone except her daughter. She doesn't know how to describe what it felt like to be that close - and then not.

She is still waiting.

The transplant waiting list is not a queue.

It is a matching system.

Your blood group must be compatible.
Your tissue type must be close enough.
Your antibody levels must not reject the donor kidney.
The algorithm must score you highest on the day a match becomes available.

Each of those conditions has to be met simultaneously.

For Black patients - who make up 12% of the waiting list but only 2% of deceased donors - the tissue type match is statistically harder to achieve.

That is not bad luck. That is maths. And it has a specific solution.
