The Council's statutory mandate is to regulate legal education in the country, and this new list, dated August 14, 2026, provides crucial updates for anyone seeking to study law.

It is critically important to note that the Council has approved the following suspensions (moratoriums) on new admissions at specific institutions:
* Baze University, Abuja: A 3-year suspension from the 2023/2024 to the 2025/2026 sessions.

Council of Legal Education Releases May 2026 Bar Final Resit Results: 54.7% Fail to Pass

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has officially approved and released the results for the May 2026 Bar Final (Resit) Examinations. The decision was finalized during the Council’s Third Quarter Hybrid Meeting held on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

According to a public notice signed by the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho, a total of 1,955 candidates sat for the resit examinations.
Breakdown of the Results:
* Pass: 885 candidates
* Conditional Pass: 55 candidates
* Fail: 983 candidates
* Absent: 32 candidates
* Withheld: 19 candidates

The official release recorded an overall pass rate of 45.3%, leaving 54.7% of the candidates unable to attain the prescribed benchmark.
This outcome reflects a grim picture for candidates re-attempting the Bar Final Examinations. With over half of the examinees failing to clear the hurdle (983 direct fails out of 1,955 total applicants), the high failure rate highlights the persistent rigor and uncompromising standards maintained by the Nigerian Law School.

A failure rate exceeding 50% underscores the rigorous academic demands required to be called to the Nigerian Bar. While the Council maintains these high standards to protect the integrity of the legal profession, the results point toward an urgent need to re-evaluate preparation strategies, remedial teaching structures, and learning support for resit students. #

"Mercenary Lawyers" – Hired Guns of the Legal Profession? ⚔️⚖️

I was at the e-filing section at the Ikeja High Court, then i came across this poster on the wall.

Just when you think you’ve seen all possible business models in the legal industry, a poster like this pops up.
"Mercenary Lawyers" offering "3rd-hand assistance" for overflowing briefs, appellate processes, and court appearances.

While freelance legal research, ghostwriting, and agency appearances are well-established practices globally, the branding here is so funny to me. 😅

On a serious note, outsourcing legal work to fellow counsel isn't new, but calling yourself a mercenary brings a whole new energy to client representation and Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC) compliance!

In law school, we all learned about statutory punishments under criminal law—including caning and Haddi lashing under the Penal Code.

However, because the Penal Code applies in the Northern States while the Criminal Code operates across the South, most legal practitioners in the South have never actually witnessed a judicial caning in practice.

Here is a rare look at how it is carried out in reality 👇

A court in Minna, Niger State, recently sentenced a man to 13 years' imprisonment and 20 strokes of the cane for the r**e of a 10-year-old child, along with a ₦250,000 compensation order. The corporal punishment was reportedly executed publicly at the Hakimi Palace in Bosso.

What is particularly notable from a procedural perspective is the ex*****oner’s technique. Notice how one arm remains completely still throughout? Under statutory guidelines, there are strict rules governing the stance, grip, and exact mechanics of administering each stroke.

Studying these penal provisions in textbooks is one thing, but seeing the actual ex*****on of judicial caning brings a whole new perspective to criminal jurisprudence. #

Federal High Court, Lagos Relocates to New Complex on Bourdillon Road

The Federal High Court of Nigeria, Lagos Judicial Division, has begun relocating from its long-standing premises to a newly completed court complex in Ikoyi.

According to an official Notice of Relocation issued by the Chief Registrar, Yahaya Yakubu Shafa, FCIArb., the Court is moving from No. 24, Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi, to the new Federal High Court Complex at No. 1B, Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The relocation is being carried out in phases, with the first batch of movements commencing on 31st July 2026.

First Batch includes:
Vacation Courts 7 and 12
Courts 2, 3, 4 and 5
Offices of the Chief Registrar, Deputy Chief Registrars, and the Electronic Litigation Registrar of Process (ELRP)

The notice states that other courts and offices will follow in subsequent batches.

The announcement was directed to the Nigerian Bar Association, litigants, other stakeholders, the Lagos State Government, and the general public.

Legal practitioners and court users are advised to take note of the change in venue as the transition progresses.

Have you ever met a lawyer and addressed them as "Barrister John" or "Barrister Ngozi"?

While it has become common practice in public discourse, the Supreme Court of Nigeria recently issued an official memorandum reaffirming that "Barrister" is a profession, not a title prefix!

📄 What Does the Memorandum Say?
In an official memo dated 13th July 2026, issued by the Chief Registrar on the directive of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, all lawyers, litigation staff, and court registrars were directed to stop using "Barrister" as a title prefix before their names in:
* Official court correspondence and records
* Identity materials and cards
* Formal documents and official engagements

The judiciary is reminding us that "Barrister" describes what a person does (their qualification/profession), not who they are as a formal title prefix like "Doctor" or "Professor."

Just as you wouldn't normally write "Accountant Sarah" or "Tailor Mike" on an official document, using "Barrister" as a title before a name is legally and professionally incorrect.

📝 How Should Lawyers Be Addressed Properly?
1. "Esq." (Esquire) after the full name:
Example:Kabir E. Akanbi, Esq. or Amina Bello, Esq.
2. Standard Titles before the name:
Example:Mr. Chidi Okonkwo or Mrs. Funke Adebayo
3. When referring to their role:
Example:"He is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria."

Plea bargaining remains one of the most effective tools for decongesting court dockets, reducing trial delays, and offering a pragmatic avenue for the administration of criminal justice.

In furtherance of Section 156 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) of Anambra State, 2022, the Office of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice recently issued a formal General Direction to Prosecutors on Plea Bargain.
Signed by the Honourable Attorney-General, Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, FCIArb(UK), this administrative directive sets clear operational guidelines for prosecuting agencies operating within the state.

📌 Key Takeaways from the General Direction:
1. Mandatory Issuance of Plea Bargain Forms:
Every defendant in a criminal trial must be served a Plea Bargain Form before, at the point of service of the charge/information, or at any time prior to taking their plea.
2. Prosecutorial Duty to Inform:
Prosecuting officers are legally required to explicitly notify defendants that they hold the option to enter into a plea bargain.
3. Strict Compliance & Sanction for Omission:
Any charge or information initiated without issuing the Plea Bargain Form to the defendant is deemed to be brought contrary to the Direction and may be discontinued.
