JOB VS CAREER [PART 2]
So far, we have made success in explaining the principal concepts in this series; Job and Career and continuing the series, today we will x-ray key factors to consider while choosing a career. It is okay to desire a field of endeavor but the most important thing is excelling in that area. Nevertheless, achieving career success begins with choosing the right career for you. Therefore carefully examine these points as it will help guide you into choosing a career best fit for you.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A CAREER
GENDER: Regardless of the height of gender equality trend in the society today, a person’s gender still has a major role to play in career choice. You need to ask yourself “does this career suite me as man or a lady” you need to know the percentage of persons in your gender class, who are successful in that field. When you do, be sure that with regards to your gender capacity that you can break forth in that before taking your first step.
INTEREST: In your choice making, you must consider your area of personal interest, note the things you love to do and can do well with little or no supervision. After that, you need to balance it out with what you want to choose as a career. A simple instance could be a passionate orator seeking a career in professional surgery; he/she will end up becoming a complete mishap. So take your time list out your interest and study how it correlates with the choice of career you have in mind and that way, you will have a longer joyful work experience.
DURABILITY: With the rate of civilization and development, so many fields of endeavor have gone on extinction and now the question could be “what would be the fate of those who gave in all they had in years past hoping to build the longest lasting career in that area”? This could happen to you in twenty to thirty years time. So you need to be sure if that lucrative and prestigious career you have in mind can stand the test of time. Foresight is important in choosing a career; if you don’t see a future with that career, then don’t venture into it.
TRANSFERABLE SKILLS: Transferable skills are general abilities acquired and can be put to use in many jobs. You gain them from previously completed jobs, projects, hobbies sports and special training. Gaining extra skills is like a support ammunition pack that serves a fall back when a career ladder breaks as discussed in the No 3 (DURABILITY). So while you choose your career, avail yourself the opportunity to add to your skills list because it might your umbrella under the heavy rain or scutchy sun.
WORKPLACE READINESS: Many employers insist that freshly graduated students are not competent enough to meet up to employability standard and therefore settling in a career for young school leavers becomes a challenge. These employers often say that fresh graduates; do not understand the business world, cannot appreciate the concept of teamwork, lack the knowledge of communication procedures, negotiation skills, problem solving strategies, leadership strength, organization capacities and internal motivation, meaning that they are NOT “Workplace Ready”. But you who is about to settle for a career, you need have to ask yourself if you have what it take for an employer to appreciate you in your desired field as regards the factors stated above. If yes, strengthen it and if no, cultivate; it’s a gateway.
CAN THIS CAREER BE FUN? It is certain that you must under perform in any field that does not give you inner satisfaction so seek a career in area of your passion. The joy you achieve in your career should not be tied to your paycheck or title alone but majorly to blissful feeling you get after successfully accomplishing a task in that field which means, if the career you have in mind cannot provide this feeling then don’t indulge in it. Career should be fun and exciting.
Proper consideration of these factors will help you avoid stunted career while you build a healthy on.
