UPDATE: SIR KUNLE POLLY OF LAGOS RECEIVES HIS INVITATION PACKAGE

In preparation for the grand Apapa/Iganmu Culture and Heritage Festival scheduled for Sunday, 6th September 2026, the Organizing Committee paid a courtesy visit to Sir Kunle Polly of Lagos.

During the visit, his invitation package was formally presented to him.

Sir Kunle Polly warmly welcomed the Organizing Committee and expressed great joy and appreciation for being remembered. He was very glad to receive the team and commended the initiative.

Drawing from his wealth of experience, he gave valuable advice on how to go about the event to ensure its success. He particularly emphasized proper security arrangements to ensure a hitch-free and peaceful celebration.

Sanwo-Olu Gives LASU’s Best Graduating Students ₦20m Each as 20,604 Receive Degrees

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has awarded ₦20 million each to the overall best graduating students of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions.

The beneficiaries are Ayilara Lawal Olawale, who graduated with a 4.96 CGPA in Project Management Technology for the 2024/2025 session, and Adebanjo Samuel Oluolamide, who achieved a 4.97 CGPA in Aerospace Engineering for the 2025/2026 session.

Sanwo-Olu announced the rewards on Wednesday during LASU’s 29th and 30th Combined Convocation Ceremonies at the Buba Marwa Auditorium, Ojo, where 20,604 students graduated.

The governor charged the graduates to use their education, character and skills to contribute meaningfully to society and serve as good ambassadors of LASU, Lagos State and Nigeria.

The ceremony also featured the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on Aliko Dangote, Akin Kekere-Ekun and Bola Adesola. Dangote, represented by his daughter Fatimah, also announced that first-class LASU engineering graduates would be offered employment opportunities at the Dangote Group after completing their NYSC programme.

The convocation marked Sanwo-Olu’s sixth and final ceremony as LASU’s Visitor, while it was also the final convocation for Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, whose five-year tenure is ending.

UPDATE: HON. TUNDE BALOGUN RECEIVES HIS INVITATION PACKAGE

In preparation for the grand Apapa/Iganmu Culture and Heritage Festival scheduled for Sunday, 6th September 2026, the Organizing Committee paid a courtesy visit to Hon. Tunde Balogun, the GAC Member and Leader of Apapa Local Government.

During the visit, his invitation package was formally presented to him.

Hon. Balogun expressed great joy and appreciation for the initiative. He commended the organizing team for putting Apapa/Iganmu on the map and for celebrating our diversity, artistry and cultural traditions.

Apapa and Iganmu Cultural and Heritage Festival to Hold on September 6, 2026 with Alhaji Alabi Pasuma Oganla and the Olori-Odo of Ijora and Iganmu Kingdom

‎Lagos, Nigeria– The much anticipated Apapa and Iganmu Cultural and Heritage Festival is set to hold on Saturday, September 6, 2026. The event will feature renowned Fuji icon, Alhaji Alabi Pasuma Oganla, alongside the Olori-Odo of Ijora and Iganmu Kingdom.

‎In preparation for the festival, the official planning team of the Apapa and Iganmu Cultural and Heritage Festival paid a courtesy visit to Alhaji Sulyman Bodunrin Ojora, popularly known as Kudety. He currently serves as the State Treasurer of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW.

Wike Targets December Completion for Key Abuja Road Projects

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has reaffirmed that major ongoing road projects in Abuja are targeted for completion by December 2026 and early January 2027. He gave the assurance on Tuesday, August 18, after inspecting the Inner Southern Expressway (Goodluck Jonathan Way) and Southern Parkway service carriageways in Gaduwa District.

Wike said completing the projects would significantly reshape Abuja’s landscape, improve connectivity and help ease traffic congestion across the Federal Capital Territory.

The Inner Southern Expressway, which was originally awarded in 2014, includes two major interchanges and more than five kilometres of road infrastructure under the current intervention. Wike said the Federal Government’s release of funds had accelerated construction.

He commended China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC), the main contractor, for maintaining day-and-night operations on the projects and said local youths had also been engaged in the construction activities.

Wike expressed confidence that the completed roads, interchanges and carriageways would improve mobility between major districts while contributing to the wider transformation of Abuja.

INEC Warns Politicians: No Violence, Hate Speech or Armed Squads Ahead of 2027

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan has warned political parties and candidates to uphold the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that credible elections depend on the conduct of political actors as much as the electoral commission.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, August 18, during the signing of the First National Peace Accord, Amupitan said campaigns and rallies for the 2027 elections would begin on Wednesday, August 19.

He urged politicians to focus on issues, policies and programmes rather than character assassination, identity-based politics and inflammatory rhetoric.

The INEC chairman also warned against incitement, digital disinformation and the use of private armed groups, saying such practices could undermine the electoral process before election day.

He urged party leaders and candidates to ensure their supporters at state, local government and grassroots levels also respect the commitments contained in the peace accord.

The Nigeria Police Force also pledged to remain professional and impartial, while warning political leaders against mobilising young Nigerians for violence.

The National Peace Committee said it has facilitated 30 peace accords since 2015 and urged political actors to compete peacefully, respect electoral institutions and protect voters.

Dickson Demands Independent INEC, Security Agencies Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Bayelsa State Governor Henry Seriake Dickson has called for stronger protection of Nigeria’s democracy, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), judiciary and security agencies to operate independently ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dickson made the call after meeting a joint delegation from the International Republican Institute (IRI) and National Democratic Institute (NDI), where he discussed the political environment in Nigeria and the challenges facing opposition parties.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) leader urged international partners to support INEC, build the capacity of political parties and intensify monitoring of the forthcoming elections to ensure Nigerians can vote freely without intimidation.

He also called for security agencies to remain impartial and warned against politicians allegedly using armed thugs, weapons and security personnel to influence elections through violence.

Dickson said individuals who terrorise, kill or intimidate citizens during elections must be identified, prosecuted and punished, adding that international sanctions should be considered where Nigeria’s institutions are unable to act effectively.

He specifically called for robust monitoring of elections in the Niger Delta and Bayelsa State, stressing that every Nigerian should have confidence that their vote will count.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has said no state in Nigeria is currently struggling to meet its salary obligations, attributing the improvement to fiscal reforms and better management of federation resources.

Oyedele made the statement on Monday, August 17, 2026, in Owerri, Imo State, while declaring open a four-day retreat of the National Conference on Fiscal Federalism and Economic Diversification (NACOFED).

He said the situation had changed significantly from previous years, when several states struggled to pay workers. According to Oyedele, the number of states facing salary difficulties rose from about five in 1999 to as many as 27 about three years ago.

“But today, no state struggles to meet salary obligations,” Oyedele said, linking the change to what he described as improved fiscal federalism and the more effective management of federation resources.

The minister also said improved federal allocations had strengthened states’ finances, with monthly Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursements now exceeding ₦2 trillion, compared with an average of about ₦300 billion under previous administrations.

EFCC Arraigns Man, Company Over Alleged N7.8m Car Fraud in Ibadan

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Adeoye Gabriel Adewale and his company, De Lukas Global Concept Limited, before the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan over an alleged N7.819 million fraud.

According to the EFCC, Adewale allegedly presented himself as a car dealer and convinced unsuspecting clients of his ability to supply vehicles.

He was said to have collected the sum of N7.819 million from Abdulrasaq Awotedo for the purchase of two cars.

However, the anti-graft agency alleged that instead of delivering the vehicles, the defendant converted the funds to his personal use.

Adewale was brought before the court on a one-count charge of stealing by conversion.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegation when the charge was read to him.

Following his plea, the prosecution counsel urged the court to fix a trial date and also requested that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility pending trial.

The defence counsel informed the court that a formal bail application had already been filed on behalf of the defendant.

Justice Olusola Adetujoye ordered that Adewale be remanded at the Agodi Correctional Centre and subsequently adjourned the case for hearing of the bail application.
