KPMG Nigeria continues to strengthen its leadership in sustainability and ESG advocacy through active participation in innovative platforms that drive public awareness and industry transformation. This was highlighted at the recently held 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲, organised by Afthonia in collaboration with the Lagos State Office of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The showcase, which adopted a theatrical format, brought attention to Nigeria’s growing textile waste crisis and the urgent need to address unsustainable practices across the fashion and textile value chain. Delivering the keynote address, Tomi Adepoju, Partner and Head, Enterprise Risk & ESG Services at KPMG West Africa, spoke on “𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚,” outlining practical strategies for advancing circular economy principles.
Tomi emphasised the need to transition from a linear “take, make, dispose” model to a circular approach that prioritises reuse, recycling, and regeneration. She highlighted the significant environmental footprint of the fashion industry, noting its contribution to global carbon emissions and resource depletion. According to her, Nigeria must adopt more responsible production and consumption practices to mitigate environmental risks while unlocking economic opportunities.
The event comes at a time when the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to revive the Cotton, Textile and Garment (CTG) industry, which has seen a significant decline in local production. With sustainability and circularity identified as key drivers of transformation, stakeholders are increasingly aligning on the need for coordinated action to rebuild the sector.
Through its active engagement, KPMG continues to position itself as a key partner in shaping sustainable business practices and driving long-term value across industries.
