I once had a bad export experience shipping items abroad from Nigeria using a freight forwarder.
The cargo was delayed, I nearly gave up, and it was stressful thankfully, it was eventually delivered.
Looking back, the real issue wasn’t just the delay.
👉 I didn’t do proper due diligence.
That experience taught me some hard but valuable lessons Nigerian exporters must learn before choosing a freight forwarder or cargo agent:
Key questions every exporter should ask:
Are you acting as my freight forwarder or an airline cargo agent?
Which airline will carry my cargo, and what is the routing?
Are you IATA Cargo Agent accredited, and who issues the AWB?
Who handles NXP, NAQS, SON, NDLEA, and other export permits?
What exactly is included in your price line by line?
What is the Plan B if the flight is cancelled or rolled over?
Who is responsible if cargo is delayed, damaged, or rejected?
Do you have experience with my specific cargo type?
Which terminal (NAHCO/SAHCO) will handle my shipment?
How will I track my cargo and get updates?
Can you share references or past clients?
What documents do you need from me before cargo gets to the terminal?
Golden rule for Nigerian exporters:
If someone cannot clearly explain the process, they cannot safely manage your cargo.
I learned this the hard way so you don’t have to.
