As a data science for business consultant, I have had opportunities to do an initial analysis and assessment for small and medium businesses in Nigeria and from this experience, I discovered two major obstacles. (1) As a data scientist, you are handicapped because you cannot do much for these businesses not matter how much skills you have. Why? Because they don’t have electronic data and even worse the quality of available data is so poor its almost useless. The funny thing is that most of them are so enthusiastic about using data to transform their business but unfortunately, we can’t do magic. (2) These businesses are also putting themselves in a handicapped situation in the sense that there is so much the future holds but they can’t really evolve into it because they have not built a data gathering habit and data quality maintenance culture.
So if you know any business in Nigeria that is yet to be on board this data culture help share to as many owners as possible, who knows you might just be saving the future of such businesses.

Academic collaborations are important so that researchers can come up with good research results and solve several problems plaguing our society to today. We tried to create one of such collaboration as a form of network diagram, using the CVs of all lecturers in my department and those collaborating with them not necessarily in my department and this is what we have.

To achieve this, we filtered out authors with degree not up to 12 and used Eigen vector to measure the centrality value of each authors. We not only discovered influential authors, but also discovered a cluster that rocks. In this cluster almost all the members have a high Eigen vector which means that they are authors that are connected to other well connected authors in the network.

Such visualizations can also be done to discover major influencers in your business competitive environment and use the inference for different kinds of business advantage for example marketing.
