This is a good reflection for the week. While growing up, we were made to understand that "opportunity comes but once" or "an opportunity once missed cannot be gotten back"
All these quotes are fallacies, because you have what it takes to create opportunity everyday. So, if opportunity doesn't knock, you should build a door". For you to build a door, it means you must be very good at what you do. You must seek to continuously improve yourself and above all be a problem fixer- that is the only way to remain relevant in our competitive environment.

Writing A Good CV

A CV is required when applying for a job. In addition to your CV, employers may also require a cover letter.
When it comes to job hunting, your CV is paramount. Get it right and you'll have an interview in no time but get it wrong, and you may face rejection.
Every CV is different as you want to show why your set of skills makes you suitable for the position you're applying for at the moment, but all follow a similar structure.
Important things to note before applying for a job.

** Ensure you tailor your CV to every job you are applying for, highlighting the specific qualities that match you to the job.

** Your CV must have a detailed job description. Do not apply for a job without a detailed JD.

** Do not send your CV without a cover letter. Most applicants neglect this and attach only their CVs . Employers/ HR Consultants shortlist applicants that are detailed considering the numbers of applications they have to go through.

** Ensure your CV does not have spelling errors. We have seen lots of CVs with to many errors. No one will go ahead to shortlist such person. This is one of the major reasons why you won't be invited for interview even when you qualify for such a job.

Create your own performance dashboard.

How do you know if you're on track to meet your goals?

You need a system to assure that you get there. Think of a car's dashboard. There are guages and indicators that tell you whether critical functions are working. Do you have enough gas? How hot is the engine? How fast are you travelling? This information "snapshot" is designed to monitor your car's performance and help you make necessary repairs before the car breaks down.

Design a dashboard for your job performance as well. Use it to see if you're getting where you want to be this quarter or this year 2018. Set goals that you'll accomplish within a given time period. Goals should always be timed and measurable- you either meet them or you dont within the time you defined.

The only exception is "learning goals", such as presentation skills, which can be more difficult to measure. Discuss your goals with your supervisor. Include any learning goals you have established to emphasize their importance in your professional development. Here are a few examples, by the end of this quarter:

Increase productivity by 10%
Decrease project budget by 15%
Improve presentation skills ( learning goals)

Finally, never assumed that your boss knows what you're getting done. Each quarter, share your dashboard results.

Make your self promotable

To get promoted, you need to already have developed the skills needed to do the job you are working toward. Learn as much as you can from people currently working in that particular position by asking questions or pitching in to help.

As you pursue your career goals, dont give your boss any reason to think you dont care about doing great work in your current job. You will need your boss's support to get the job you want and if you're doing your current job well, there is no way you'll be promoted.

So be sure your current work doesn't suffer, and that you make your boss look good. That's your job today.
