Today, as Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Anniversary, I am revisiting this spoken word piece created nearly ten years ago, yet it remains timeless. I hope it inspires you as deeply as it continues to inspire me.

In today’s world, paradoxically, it is the boldest action that is often the safest. Remaining where you are in a world that is changing so rapidly is, in fact, the most dangerous of all places to be in.

United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, Read Our Mail!
_______
In April 2022, compelled by the state of Africa and the latent opportunities for transformative businesses seeking to convert the continent's problems into opportunities through social impact, we commenced work on a framework for corporate impact on the continent based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As we designed this framework, we sought for a name best suited for it. At first, we called it the State of Africa’s Sustainability (SOAS) Matrix.
________
However, we were mindful that this could create brand conflict with the distinguished School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS University of London). So, mindful of the brand integrity imperative, the brainstorming continued.
______
As we worked on this social impact framework, it became obvious to us that it would be applicable across regions, not just Africa, we then renamed it the State of Regional Sustainability (SORS) Matrix.
______
However, we further realized that this corporate social impact framework is applicable at the national, subnational, and even community levels as far as the requisite data is available. We then eliminated the geographical adjectival restrictions and renamed it the State of Sustainability (SOS) Matrix.
_______
Mindful of the urgency of action that the matrix demanded in some of its quadrants, we were convinced that we had arrived at a suitable name as "SOS" represents a distress call.
_______
Fast forward to September 20, 2022, while addressing the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations, here comes UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, sending a distress call to world leaders when he states that: “The Sustainable Development Goals are issuing an SOS.”
_____.
Having encountered the 2022 scorecard on the SDGs while working on the SOS Matrix, the degree of urgency that the UN chief had awakened the world to did not come as a surprise. Instead, it convinced us all the more of the timeliness of the SOS Matrix and the suitability of the name. It was as though the UN chief had "read our mail", as we would say in certain informal conversational contexts.
______
The SOS Matrix is an ongoing project but its preliminary version has been unveiled in this edition of REMAKE AFRICA Intelligence titled, Corporate Impact Intelligence: Mapping Africa’s Corporate Impact Opportunities Using the SOS Matrix.

Between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Corporate Social Innovation (CSI): Which of These Corporate Impact Models Does Africa Need?
________

Against the backdrop of the megatrend towards sustainability and the increasing call on businesses to remodel for impact, the question lingers as to the most suitable model for corporate impact between the investment model and the intervention model or between the social responsibility model and the social innovation model. This debate remains particularly relevant for Africa in light of the continent's enormous challenges - challenges that are being responded to across the spectrum by brands doing business in Africa.
________

There are examples to consider that were culled from the eBook, "Corporate Impact Intelligence: Mapping Africa's Corporate Impact Opportunities Using the SOS Matrix". These examples were based on five differences between the philanthropic intent of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the strategic intent of Corporate Social Innovation (CSI) highlighted by the Institute for Social Innovation and Babson College Social Innovation Lab.

“The old business model of a myopic pursuit of profit above all else is at best imprudent and, at worst, reckless in our increasingly interconnected and interdependent world.”
