ON LEADERSHIP, EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND EX*****ON DISCIPLINE
Sincere gratitude to Linus Okorie and the entire leadership team of GOTNI Leadership Centre for the opportunity to share insights on How Emotional Intelligence propels Executive Intelligence to the audience of Deputy Vice Chancellors, Deputy Rectors, and Deputy Provosts of Nigeria’s Tertiary Institutions.
The subject of emotional intelligence is one that address:
1. Self- Awareness. Are you conscious of your values and how they find expression in your thoughts, feelings (emotions), and actions?
2. Self-Management. Are you equipped to handle deviations from your values? Can you caution yourself from going astray?
3. Social Awareness. How much of other people and institutions are you aware of? Every leader should be conscious of other people’s values, triggers, feelings, and actions.
4. Relationship Management. How do you continue to engage others and deliver results together in spite of obvious concerns about alignment in approach and values? Leaders must anticipate behaviors and position to manage them without depriving everyone of value.
I told them that
- what you know about yourself is Self Awareness.
- what you know about others and institutions is Social Awareness
- what you do with what you know about yourself is Self Management
- what you do with what you know about other people and institutions is Relationship Management
The highlight of the day was when I used my signature fable of A Sick Farmer, His Pig, and His Chicken. I shared how the lack of emotional intelligence on the part of the pig and chicken led to the death of the farmer.
It was a great experience for me and I am grateful that the opportunity enabled me to contribute to the capacity development intervention of our tertiary institutions powered by TETFund
