Daily Motivation

*Inspire People, Keep Hope Alive*

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. - John Quincy Adams.

One of the greatest gifts you can give to an individual is the gift of HOPE. Inspire people around you to believe they can aspire and become more.

Be a source of inspiration and encouragement to others. It is easier to help someone to get up, than to pull him or her down. It is faster and easier to think in a positive way, than in a negative way. Positivity is straightforward and simple. Negativity is complicated!

I choose to be an inspiration and agent of hope and encouragement all the time. That's why I write everyday in my Daily Motivation series. I have been writing it everyday for 14 years. It's challenging to be consistent in doing it, but when I remember that someone somewhere ( in Nigeria and abroad) is waiting to read my daily post - before setting out, I am motivated to keep writing.

Being a source of inspiration is divine. Being a source of hope is the real essence of life.

If you are a business leader or top professional, take a decision to mentor young people. I started it 13 years ago and I can't stop supporting young people in the little ways I can.

As a consultant in marketing and capability building spaces, I know the importance of knowledge. Today's world is about relevant knowledge. This is why I encourage mentoring. Get a mentor. Our world will be a better place if folks reach out to mentors that will help them grow organically and keep hope alive.

Take action today and become a better you.

Move from good to better, then to best.

*The Price Of Not Taking The Right Action At The Right Time*

I saw this interesting piece written by Ngozika Oli. It's a good case of: vision, innovation, business strategy, moving with the time, and sense of mission. You will get value in it.

Read:

"Do you know why fraudsters are called Yahoo boys?
Because Yahoo was once the undisputed king of the internet.

There was a time when Yahoo was everything. Emails, news, weather, chat rooms, music, even dating. If you were online in the late ’90s and early 2000s, you were probably using Yahoo.

Then came two nerdy guys: Larry Page and Sergey Brin, with a better search engine. In 1998, they offered to sell their new project, Google, to Yahoo, for just $1 million.

Yahoo said NO.
Why?
Because Yahoo didn’t see the value in search.
They believed their goal was to keep users ON their platform, not help them leave by searching the wider web.

Fast forward to 2002.

Yahoo realized Google wasn’t just another search engine.
It was growing fast, and taking over the internet. So Yahoo came back to the table.

This time, they offered $3 billion to buy Google.
But now it was Google’s turn to say no.

Larry and Sergey knew what they had.
They believed their idea was worth more, and they were right.

Today, Google is worth over $1.5 trillion.
Yahoo? It was sold off in pieces for less than $5 billion.

How Yahoo Went From King to Cautionary Tale:
1998: Declined to buy Google for $1M
2002: Tried again for $3B, and got rejected
2003–2005: Bought several companies, including Flickr and GeoCities, but didn’t innovate or scale them properly

2008: Rejected a $44.6B acquisition offer from Microsoft (thinking they were still worth more)
2016: Yahoo was sold to Verizon for $4.83B, a fraction of what it once was worth

5 Brutal Business Lessons from Yahoo’s Fall:

1. The opportunity you ignore today might be your biggest regret tomorrow. Always be willing to explore early-stage innovation.

2. Don’t let short-term thinking blind you to long-term growth. Yahoo was focused on keeping users on their platform. Google was focused on helping users get what they need fast. That difference changed everything.

3. Your g

3. Your greatest threat is often the thing you don’t take seriously. Google started small, but it was obsessed with doing one thing really well: search.

4. You can’t buy your way into innovation. Yahoo tried to catch up by acquiring companies (Google, YouTube, Tumblr, etc.) but they didn’t have the culture or clarity to scale them.

5. Success can make you blind. Stay humble and hungry.
Yahoo got comfortable. Meanwhile, Google stayed scrappy, user-focused, and relentlessly innovative.

Moral of the story?
Vision beats valuation.
And staying relevant requires reinvention—not just recognition.

Now to you, what are you doing today that your future business won’t regret?"

I often recommend to business owners and professionals to be visionary and informed in order to stay relevant. You should know your market and be among the first players that will get to the future before competition.
In all you do in business, be innovative and customer-centric. Let everything you do in the business be about delighting the customer and bringing value. This is how to succeed and this is where Yahoo got it wrong. Yahoo was more transactional in the case and they paid heavily for it!

Knowing what you now know, what are you going to do differently in your business? Let's have your feedback on the case.

Move from good to better, then to best.

*Self-Discipline: The Mother Of All Character Traits*

With self-discipline most anything is possible.
-Theodore Roosevelt.

My simplest definition of self-discipline is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

Self-discipline is the attribute that tells you not to drink a class of wine even when you have your refrigerator stocked with cartons of wine. Self-discipline is the virtue that will make a man spend weeks or months in a hotel - on an official trip and he won't misbehave - even when no one is watching him in the faraway place he traveled to.

I call self-discipline the mother of all virtues because that's what it truly is.

Another outstanding quality of self-discipline is that it is the strength or resolve to do the right thing even when you don't feel like doing it.

Experience in my personal and professional life has taught me that self-discipline is the mother of all the character traits. It is the fulcrum upon which every positive character stands.

Self-discipline is the ability to control one's feelings and overcome one's weaknesses. It enables you to stay in charge.

It takes self-discipline and will power to be successful.

Every other strong personality trait that leads to greatness is embedded in self- discipline. In fact, the presence or absence of self-discipline determines a lot of things in our lives. The more we exhibit a great attribute of self-discipline, the more we accomplish more things.

Self-discipline is not something you buy in an open market or from the neighborhood shop; self- discipline is a positive character trait that is nurtured from within; it flourishes from the inside. It is an attribute you train everyday.
Self- discipline is like muscle: the more you train it, the stronger you become.

The good news is that self-discipline is learnable. This may not be easy but it's doable.

The best way to achieve desired change is to unlearn, relearn and continue to learn. We can actually unlearn the things that weaken self-discipline, and learn and promote noble attributes that enhance this great trait.

Self-discipline sets the pace for performance.

In fact, you can't even plan in the absence of self-discipline. It takes discipline to plan. It takes discipline to follow through the plan. It takes discipline to execute actions. Without self-discipline, we achieve nothing.

Self-discipline leads to attainment of set goals, without it, most things wished for become illusion and imaginary! It takes self-discipline to plan and commence the right action.

You can't discount self- discipline on the ladder of success.

As we set goals, may we endeavour to work on improving our self-discipline quotients.

The good news is that every good thing is learnable. Start today. The time is always right to do the right thing.
