"An apple a day keeps the doctor away" is an old
Welsh proverb that most of us are familiar with, but
what makes this fruit so special? What health benefits
are associated with eating apples? As one of the most cultivated and consumed fruits in
the world, apples are continuously being praised as a
"miracle food". In fact, apples were ranked first in Medical News
Today's featured article about the top 10 healthy foods. Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants, flavanoids, and dietary fiber. The phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may
help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. This article provides a nutritional profile of the fruit
and its possible health benefits. It also discusses the
possible risks and precautions and some frequently
asked questions. Possible health benefits of apples Apples contain almost no fat, sodium or cholesterol. A collection of research studies suggests that apples
may well be one of the most healthy foods for you to
include in your daily diet. Let's take a look at the
studies and the possible health benefits suggested by
them: 1) Improving neurological health A 2006 study published in the journal Experimental
Biology and Medicine found that quercetin (one of the
antioxidants found abundantly in apples) was one of
two compounds that helped to reduce cellular death that is caused by oxidation and inflammation of neurons. 8 Another study presented at the same conference and
published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease
suggested that apple juice consumption may increase
the production in the brain of the essential
neurotransmitter acetylcholine, resulting in improved
memory among mice who have Alzheimer's-like symptoms. 8 It should be noted that both studies were funded by
unrestricted grants provided by the U.S. Apple
Association and Apple Products Research and
Education Council. 2) Preventing dementia A study published in the Journal of Food Science in
2008 suggested that eating apples may have benefit for your neurological health. The researchers found that including apples in your daily diet may protect
neuron cells against oxidative stress-induced
neurotoxicity and may play an important role in
reducing the risk of neurodegenerative disorders
such as Alzheimer's disease. 3) Reducing your risk of stroke A study involving 9,208 men and women showed
that those who ate the most apples over a 28-year
period had the lowest risk for stroke. The researchers concluded that the intake of apples is related to a decreased risk of thrombotic stroke. 4 4) Lowering levels of bad cholesterol A group of researchers at The Florida State University
stated that apples are a "miracle fruit". They found
that older women who ate apples everyday had 23% less bad cholesterol (LDL) and 4% more good
cholesterol (HDL) after just six months. 5) Reducing your risk of diabetes Apples could also help lower your risk of diabetes. A
study involving 187,382 people found that people who ate three servings per week of apples , grapes, raisins, blueberries or pears had a 7% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who did not. 6) Warding off breast cancer There is growing evidence suggesting that an apple a day may help prevent breast cancer , according to a series of studies conducted by prominent Cornell
researcher Rui Hai Liu. Liu said her research adds to "the growing evidence
that increased consumption of fruits and vegetables,
including apples, would provide consumers with
more phenolics, which are proving to have important
health benefits. I would encourage consumers to eat
more and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables daily." 7) Obesity In a study published in the journal Food Chemistry in
2014, a team of researchers analyzed how the
bioactive compounds of seven different varieties of
apples - Granny Smith, Braeburn, Fuji, Gala, Golden
Delicious, McIntosh and Red Delicious - affected the good gut bacteria of diet-induced obese mice. The researchers found that, compared with all other
apple varieties, Granny Smiths appeared to have the
most beneficial effect on good gut bacteria. They
suggest that their findings may lead to strategies that
prevent obesity and its associated disorders.

Here are five apple cider vinegar myths and facts you
should know: 1.) Apple cider vinegar for weight loss One of the most popular claims about ACV is that it
can help speed up weight loss by burning fat faster.
However, according to Schmitt, there is no scientific
evidence to back up these claims about ACV affecting
metabolism. 2.) ACV for cardiovascular health According to Health Today, it has been claimed that ACV can help boost cardiovascular health. There have
been studies that vinegar can help reduce blood
pressure, cholesterol and blood triglycerides.
However, these studies were done in mice models
and have yet to be proven in human clinical studies. 3.) ACV for diabetes According to a report by Live Strong, there was a study on vinegar at Arizona State University. To test
the theory, researchers gave volunteers 2 tbsp of
vinegar during bedtime to find out if their glucose
levels upon waking up were lower. They found that
the vinegar reduced the blood sugar levels by 4 to 6
percent. However, the studies were small and the reductions weren't significant enough to minimize the
negative outcomes of diabetes. 4.) ACV as anti-bacterial According to Greatist, there have been many claims that ACV is an effective antimicrobial solution.
However, because of its acidic properties, it becomes
too strong and unsafe to be put on skin, much less on
open wounds and infections. It is not safe to use on a
sore throat as well. 5.) ACV for acne, warts and dandruff In the same Greatist article, it was established that
ACV is not fit for open wounds and cuts. But many
ACV proponents have stated that swathing ACV on
their skin helped their skin texture, got rid of their
acne or wart and cleared their dandruff. However, LA-
based holistic nutrition and wellness coach Nicole Granato says otherwise. There aren't any studies to
supply scientific evidence that ACV can clear acne or
dandruff. Acetic acid in ACV is only 5 percent so it is
not acidic enough to destroy wart tissues.

Preparation
* Wash and Cut the vegetables into thin strip(if you
haven't done that yet) and set aside.
Also Cut the chicken or beef into thin strips and set
aside. Tip: I always recommend, using a combination of
Chicken thighs&Breasts, because the fat from the
thighs adds extra flavor and compliments the taste of
the chicken breast.
* Place the chicken strips into a bowl, add the
marinade and mix thoroughly until well incorporated. Then cover and store in the fridge for 2 to 24 hours
(depending all how much time you have). Tip: I actually don't wait 24 hours, I just do store
overnight or for 2-3 hours, but I realized that the
longer the meat marinades, the better it tastes. * In a pan, Heat up a tablespoonful of oil.Add the
marinated chicken/beef &Stir fry until juicy and
brown. Scoop unto a plate and set aside.

Nigerian Shawarma is the ''Nigerian-style'' of the
famous Shawarma (made with beef or chicken filling).
This tasty snack has become a popular meal on the
streets of Nigeria and is also one of the most
requested recipes I have received. Years back, I used to get mine at the eatery and also
wondered how I could re-make this tasty snack at
home with basic spices readily available in most
Nigerian kitchens;including the Shawarma bread & the tasty meat filling..After some trials, I finally got the
perfect mix (I just love making my food from scratch
☺). This recipe is deliciously addicting and so easy to
prepare, that you'll want to make Shawarma
everyday. All said, this is my Nigerian -style Chicken

A box of chocolates is nice, of course. But truth be told,
come February 14th (or any time of year, really),
we’d rather have a chewy, soft, crunchy, tender,
perfect cookie. And with the recent opening of
Seattle’s first cookie-only bakery, Hello Robin, we
felt newly inspired to investigate our city’s cookie culture. We nibbled our way through batch after batch
—discarding the too cakey and the too crumbly—to
gather a dozen of the city’s finest, most decadent
cookies. Don’t forget the milk. From top left, clockwise: 1 Rick’s chocolate apricot espresso at
Macrina Bittersweet chocolate chunks are accented with
gently sweet apricot bits and the thrum of ground
espresso, which plays through the cookie like
background music. It’s one of the most original—
and unexpectedly delicious—cookies in town. $1.90
each. Multiple locations Macrina Bakery, Belltown, Queen Anne and S**o; macrinabakery.com 2 Cheweos at Crumble & Flake Neil Robertson’s cheweos are the most marvelous
riff on a sandwich cookie we’ve ever tasted. Two
tender, impossibly thin, soft chocolate cookies
sandwich a creamy, buttery filling, sometimes
flavored with peanut butter or mint, and there’s
always a coffee version. Oreos ain’t got nothin’ on these. $2.50 each. Crumble & Flake, 1500 E Olive Way;
206.329.1804; crumbleandflake.com 3 Salty peanut butter at Wandering Goose These big, moist cookies are packed with chunky
peanut butter and brown sugar, and then there’s a
whisper of fleur de sel sea salt on top. It just doesn’t
get any better. $3 each. Wandering Goose, 403 15th
Ave. E; 206.323.9938; thewanderinggoose.com 4 Chocolate cherry toffee at Wandering Goose This cookie is a dream: chewy cookie dough with
chocolate chunks and hits of dried cherries and shiny,
melting pools of caramel-like toffee bits here and
there. It’s just about perfect. $3 each 5 Habañero orange chocolate chip at Hello
Robin These petite cookies (about the diameter of an Oreo)
pack one heck of a flavor punch. The spicy habañero
plays well with the orange zest and juice in the dough;
the melty chocolate chips add nice, rich contrast.
These are cookies with a kick, and we dig that. $1.50
each. Hello Robin, 522 19th Ave. E; hellorobincookies.com 6 Molasses at Hello Robin Small and chewy, with a crunchy topping of turbinado
sugar, these little guys, from Seattle’s first dedicated
cookie shop, are the best we’ve tasted. Even better:
a mini ice cream sandwich made with Molly Moon’s
vanilla bean ice cream between two molasses
cookies. $1.50 each 7 Pink peppercorn shortbread at Crumble &
Flake Our quest for the ideal shortbread cookie ended here,
and with an unexpected flavor: pepper. Thin and fine,
with pretty crushed pink peppercorns dotting the
tender butter dough and a scalloped edge, this cookie
is sophisticated and feminine. And, of course,
delicious, too. $2 each. 8 Chocolate chip at DeLaurenti Browned around the edges, soft and a bit doughy on
the inside, with semisweet chocolate that is somehow
still melty when you bend the cookie in half, and big
enough to share (but you really won’t want to)—
this achieves the chocolate chip cookie ideal. $2 each.
DeLaurenti, 1435 First Ave.; 206.622.0141; delaurenti.com 9 Creamsicle at Nollie’s (middle cookie) Clever! The frosted cookie version of that summertime
orange-and-cream ice cream treat, this is soft, moist,
tender, with orange zest and juice for zing. $2 each.
Nollie’s, 1165 Harrison St.; 206.402.6724; nolliescafe.com DARK CHOCOLATE? YES, PLEASE 10 Salty chocolate from Kakao (Top) Dig salty caramel? Try salty chocolate. Local
baker Christine Lea of Christine’s Catering sells her
deeply rich, double chocolate (Dutched cocoa powder
and Callebaut chocolate) cookies, sprinkled with
Maldon salt, at South Lake Union chocolate shop
Kakao. They make for premium coffee dippers, or opt for a mocha, which Kakao will make with your choice
of Valrhona or Ghirardelli chocolate. $1.20 each.
Kakao, 415 Westlake Ave. N; 206.432.1118; kakaoseattle.com 11 Chocolate truffle cookie from Dahlia Bakery (Middle) These dense, crackly-topped cookies are
made with melted bittersweet chocolate, chocolate
chips and cocoa powder. Believe us: triple the
chocolate, triple the pleasure. $2.50 each. Dahlia
Bakery 2011 Fourth Ave.; 206.441.4540; tomdouglas.com 12 Vegan chocolate cookie from Macrina (Bottom) You’ll never know (or care) that this craggy
chocolate cookie is vegan. Dense and fudgy, this treat
has a dark, double chocolate hit from cocoa powder
and bittersweet chocolate chips. $1.90 each

We love a good picnic and try to show appreciation for our staff whenever we can! One day last week we were able to enjoy both. We closed a little early to celebrate our employees with a company picnic. Read about this year's Feast of Macrina in our blog.

TRAVEL’S BEST SUMMER FOODS 2015 Besides sunbathing on the beach and surfing, nothing else completes the long summer days like great food! From slow-smoked, fatty brisket and sweet fried plantain chips with guacamole to ice cream and apple pie, you’re not going to want to miss out on our essential Travel’s Best Summer Foods 2015. From where to go and what to eat, we’ve put together a delicious list with the help of our panel of experts, includingTop Chef Season 10 winner Kristen Kish, host of the new Travel Channel show 36 Hours, and restaurateur and chef Frank Prisinzano. BEST BRUNCH: THE BEACHCOMBER AT CRYSTAL COVE, NEWPORT COAST, CA The Beachcomber at Crystal Cove A weekender favorite — brunch — is good in any season. But summertime lends itself to some unique places, including the Beachcomber. This café has the location, set right on the beach in the Crystal Cove area of Newport Coast, CA. “This place is amazing! Every blue moon, I will have dessert for brunch, and it consists of beach beignets,” says Marianela Pereyra, host of Marianela’s Best Beaches. Along with its can’t-miss beignets, the Beachcomber serves a variety of brunch options, such as lemon ricotta blueberry pancakes and crab cake Benedict. BEST BARBECUE: SMITTY’S MARKET, LOCKHART, TX Smitty’s Market Perhaps in the dead heat of summer, you don’t think about traveling south to Texas. However, Smitty’s Market in Lockhart is nestled between 2 of our favorite cities: Austinand San Antonio. Minus the heat, both cities have tons to offer year-round. But back to the barbecue. For a purely authentic Texan barbecue experience, Smitty’s, which is roughly 30 minutes south of Austin, provides it all, but not forks or sticky- sweet barbecue sauce. “I didn’t expect that at one of the best meals of my life — and hands down the best barbecue — I would be refused a fork,” says Kristen Miglore, executive editor at Food52.com. “They don’t even have them at Smitty’s Market, so don’t bother asking. Be sure to order the slow- smoked, fatty brisket and the sausage, wrapped up in paper by the pitmaster, and tack on a Lone Star beer at the register. Smitty’s will provide a knife, hot sauce, soft white sandwich bread to mop it all up, and a severe but unexpectedly charming ambience.” BEST SEAFOOD: CANTLER’S RIVERSIDE INN, ANNAPOLIS, MD iStockphoto.com/Joanna Pecha It’s summer, so that means seafood, and lots of it! What better place for crabs than Annapolis, the capital of the blue crab state, Maryland. A stone’s throw from the United States Naval Academy, Cantler’s restaurant is located on Mill Creek, which flows from Whitehall Bay. Side note: If you want to arrive by boat, docking is free (first come, first served)! The family-friendly atmosphere with community-style tables is perfect when you’re elbow-deep in crabmeat, hot butter and Old Bay seasoning. “I love the blue crab with the potatoes, corn and bread that come with it,” says Chris Grundy, host of DIY’s Cool Tools and Blog Cabin, as well as Travel Channel’s new show 50/50. “It’s not just the food, though. It’s right on the water, with big picnic tables, and you just eat with whoevers sitting at the table with you. People pulling up on boats and joining the party is fun, too.” BEST SUMMER PIE: FOUR & TWENTY BLACKBIRDS, BROOKLYN, NY Gentl & Hyers Sisters Melissa and Emily Elsen have brought their rural farm baking skills from South Dakota to the artisan streets of Brooklyn, NY, at their Four & Twenty Blackbirds pie shop. Their pies are so beautiful that even if you aren’t a pie lover, you will wish you were. The 2 sisters “turn out an absolutely perfect all-butter crust that’s always golden brown and amazingly flaky, with just a little bit of tang from apple cider vinegar,” says Brendan Spiegel, a food and travel writer who’s been featured in The New York Times. “It’s their innovative seasonal fillings that really make the pies, though, from rhubarb crumble to birch beer float, and the year-round salted caramel apple is a perfect mix of savory, sweet and salty. “Also check them out at their spin-off cafe in the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library or at all 3 Brooklyn locations of Shake Shack! BEST ICE CREAM: LADUREE SOHO, NEW YORK CITY Ladurée Entering Laduree in SoHo is like walking into one of the
finest pastry shops in Paris, and rightfully so: The Laduree dint was established in 1862 with the opening
of its first bakery at 16 Rue Royale in Paris. With shops and restaurants all over the world, Laduree is commonly known for its beautiful macarons, cakes and ice cream. “Sitting in its outdoor garden, digging into a Coupe Soho (salted butter ice cream and ginger ice cream drizzled with caramel sauce and toasted macadamia nuts) feels like a vacation in itself,” says foodie, traveler and actress Meghan Markle, who is known for her role as Rachel Zane on USA’s Suits. “Francophiles flock to this New York outdoor hot spot, so tuck in to a cup or bowl of one of their many macaron glaces (raspberry, citron, pistachio, rose petal!) and feel as though you’ve just made a jaunt to the south of France. It’s absolute bliss!” BEST BALLPARK FOOD: BLUE SMOKE ON THE ROAD, QUEENS, NY Nicole Franzen Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, you have to admit that summer isn’t complete without attending some kind of ballgame. Going to the game is much more about drinking and eating really well. At their home stadium, Citi Field, the New York Mets have figured out how to keep their baseball and non- baseball fans pretty happy. Say hello to Blue Smoke on
the Road and its “gotta-have” North Carolina pulled-
pork sandwich. Opened by famed Shake Shack owner Danny Meyer, Blue Smoke serves “meaty sandwiches stuffed with applewood smoked pork and
topped with a soft brioche bun,” says paper-goods designer and travel blogger Kelly Purkey. “This tasty sandwich isn’t available at the regular Blue Smoke locations, so making a trip out to see the Mets and picking up this sandwich is definitely worth putting on your summer bucket list.” BEST FOOD TRUCK: MEI MEI, BOSTON Caviar We love food trucks here at Travel Channel. We’ve made no secret of that. So we were pretty excited when Top Chef Season 10 winner Kristen Kish, who’s now part of the Travel Channel family, too, with the show 36 Hours, picked Mei Mei in Boston as the best food truck for Travel’s Best Summer Foods 2015. Its menu changes daily to take advantage of the freshest of ingredients in dishes such as the Double Awesome, which has Cabot cheddar, pesto with local greens, and 2 oozy eggs. Another favorite, the Summertime Noodle Salad, has ginger-soy dressing, carrots, seaweed, tofu, pickles and peanuts. Stay on top of Mei Mei’s Twitter feed for location and menu updates. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday. You can also catch the food truck at SoWa Open Market on Sundays (May through October) on Harrison Avenue. The “farmers-market-esque section includes produce, doughnuts, potted herbs and honeys,” Kristen says. There are “food trucks galore. All the favorite trucks in Boston, including Mei Mei, gather in a parking lot and dish out food to long lines with eager bellies.” BEST FOOD FESTIVAL: FEAST PORTLAND, PORTLAND, OR Courtesy of Feast Portland Food festivals abound across North America, especially during the warm summer months. But this festival in Portland, OR, is about more than just eating and drinking well. The mission of Feast Portland, which is held in September, is to end hunger in Oregon and the US by supporting organizations such as Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, which has served more than 700,000 meals to at-risk kids in the past 5 years. Like Californians, Oregonians are “obsessed with supporting local” resources, says chef and traveler Jackie Kai Ellis. “But they strike a playful balance with their down-to-earth food and cheeky humor. Feast Portland pays homage to this culture. From elaborate collaboration dinners, hands-on butchery or brewery classes, discussions on social topics, and twilight markets, the festival brings chefs from around
North America (including yours truly this year) for a celebration spanning the entire city. And everyone parties hard for the noble cause of awesome food.” BEST BAR FOOD: BARTACO, ATLANTA Manny Vargas We’ve got “Hotlanta” on our radar this year. The atmosphere of the Mexican-themedBartaco in West Midtown is the essential summer go-to spot for drinks and food served inside or out. The menu focuses on small bites, such as tacos starting at $2.50. “It is almost impossible to pick my favorite bar food here, but the sesame rib-eye taco — which speaks to the Asian and Mediterranean influences at Bartaco — is definitely a winner,” says Nadeen White, an award- winning travel blogger who created and edits the travel and lifestyle blog TheSophisticated Life. “The meat is juicy and flavorful, with just the right amount of spice. My other favorites include the baja fish and the curry shrimp tacos.” Nadeen is also a fan of the sweet fried plantains and guacamole with chips. You can find additional Bartaco locations in New York, Connecticut and Virginia. BEST RESTAURANT WITH A VIEW: DA SALVATORE RISTORANTE, RAVELLO, ITALY Da Salvatore Ristorante A Ravello We love Italy, so we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention one of its charming small-town restaurants with a jaw-dropping, spectacular view of the Amalfi Coast. East of Sorrento and Positano, Ravello is home to Da Salvatore Ristorante. “The wine list is to die for, and the entire bounty of the Mediterranean and the Campania countryside is at your fingertips,” says Frank Prisinzano, a restaurateur and chef. “Go for the local mozzarella di Agerola, the burrata with tuna crudo, the spaghetti with clams, the cocoa- and coffee-braised veal cheek with ricotta gnudi, and any of the whole, roasted, local fish they are offering.” One of the joys of summer cuisine is the ability to use seasonal ingredients at their best. The French and Italians have nailed that concept. There are plenty of great restaurant options along the Amalfi Coast, but if we’re picking the best, it’s Da Salvatore. “Go for a
long lunch, ask for Pino, tell him I sent you, and let him guide you through the incredible wine list for pairings,” Frank suggests. Source: travelchannel.com
