DRAPERY
In the acceptance of draperies (curtains) for cleaning, certain observatons must be made and precautions taken to avoid transfer of liability from the owner to the cleaning outfit (Especially at first wash)
1. Different parts of the same curtain are usually not exposed to light proportionately, hence, photofading may also occur disproportionately, i.e. after washing, some portions may appear faded while others are not.
2. Owner should be made to realise that at first wash, there is a possibility of shrinkage or relaxation, whereby the linning becomes longer than the main curtain.
3.Curtains with rubberized self linning may undergo sticking and eventual peeling of the linning.
4. Where the linning colour is sharply contrasting to the main curtain, e.g. very bright versus very dark, the bright part may come out dull.

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE.
The standard operating procedure is the well articulated, and documented processes involved in the ex*****on of an operation to allow for standardization. It is the catechism of operation.
In the drycleaning industry , however, we witness many outfits performing their operations in a haphazard manner without a pathway that can stand the test of time.
It is not only necessary but important that every outfit should have a documented SOP guiding it's operations and covering every department of the process chain.

PUCKERING
This is usually referred to by many as 'Squeezing' or 'Bubbles'. It is commonly found on the front portion of jackets.
CAUSE - Most jackets are constructed with stay padding in the front portion. This 'Stay' is usually mostly acetate fiberk which are not water friendly. When a jacket is washed in water (even when the fiber of the main fabric is water friendly), the acetate 'Stay' shrinks thereby becoming shorter than the main fabric. There occurs therefore an overlap of the fabric that now looks as bubbles.
PREVENTION
Dryclean all jackets, and by extension, all suits.
CAN THIS BE RECTIFIED?
Sometimes puckering may be corrected.
i. By thorough steam pressing.
ii. Where the above failed, you woul need a suit tailor to open up, remove to press or replace the 'Stay', then seeing the suit back.

MILDEW. We are still in the raining season and of the prevalent problems on our fabrics associated wirh this season is MILDEW.
What ia mildew? It is a fungi growth which first appears whitish, later developing into brownish, or most times, blackish dots. It weakens the fabric and may eventually tear it.
CAUSES - It is caused majorly by dampness, aided by dirt and darkness. PREVENTION. 1. Don't pack dirty clothes down for too lond. Damp clothes should be air dried even when not ready to wash. Keep wardrobes well ventilated.

In this new dispensation, we shall be entertaining questions arising from challenges encountered by anyone, from setting up to operational issues.
Today, I received a question from a drycleaner in Benin.
Q - What can I do to reverse the browning of some white fabrics after treating them with chlorine bleach?
A - Firstly, chlorine bleach is the commonly used hypochlorite bleach sold under different trade names, Jik, Hypo, Parozone, etc.
The whiteness of some fabrics was made so by enhancers called'Optical brighteners'.
Chlorine bleach when added to optical brighteners destroys it, resulting in dullness or browning of that portion of the fabric. Most times, this is irreversible.
It is therefore advisable to test even whites in a hidden portion with chlorine bleach before full application.
