CAN OKOROCHA CALM THE SOUTH EAST AGITATIONS 2023?

BY Yusuf Aminu

Regional agitations are synonymous with Nigerian politics. As a matter of fact, they have always played a major role in determining the emergence of the President per time.

In 1999, agitations for MKO Abiola and the debacle of June 12 brought about an All - Yoruba showdown between Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Chief Olu Falae

The rumblings of the OPC also helped matters.

In 2010, the agitations of MEND and militants also gave rise to the emergence of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who under normal circumstances, had little or no chance at all.

In 2014, The emergence of Boko Haram predicated the shift of power to the north and the need to checkmate it. A former disciplined General, Muhammadu Buhari emerged at the helm of affairs to stem the tide.

So it is no surprise, that the agitations in the southeast , the IPOB and calls for Biafra would most likely lead to the emergence of a South Eastern President, but the benefactor cannot just be anybody from the South East.

The level of mistrust and misconceptions between the core north and the South East is second to none.
The civil war left both regions wary and weary.
The north can only support a South Easterner who, in their opinion, has no vendetta and no vengeance at heart; one who can not lead another secession. It must be one who will bring about a fairer, united Nigeria where resources are distributed equitably.

Mere campaign manifestos or oratory cannot gain such trust.

It takes a proven track record of supporting, working with and investing in the north to gain that trust and only Senator Rochas Okorocha fits into that bill amongst the other prominent politicians from the south east.

Born and educated in the noŕth, he has had several free education secondary schools in the north and other investments for over 2 decades. South west and south south have an evidence of his investments too.

No South Easterner has more traditional titles in the north (and that by a far margin; Dan Jekan Sokoto and Jagaban Lafia readily comes to mind ). Recently, Okorocha went for a private audience with the Emir of Daura (the progenitor of the Hausas) and the Emir instantly gave him the traditional title of Maga Alheri Hausa (great giver to the entire Hausa people), Unplanned : Unsolicited

Just the fruit of many years of brotherhood and trust.

No Southern politician speaks Hausa more fluently than him. He is seen at even huge Islamic festivals from time in the north yet a devout Christian (with chapels dotting anywhere he stays). Little wonder, he is called in a jocular way “ Okoro-Hausa “ in some circles.

What looks like a caterpillar now may metamorphose to a beautiful butterfly by 2023.

STATE OF THE NATION:
Okorocha speaks to BBC Hausa

What’s happening with IPOB it is something we took like a child’s play

Like young men’s and women who have no jobs and are acting to be recognized but now it has become something worrisome but the truth. I cannot say that there is any leader or any important person in politics that is inciting these youths.

These youths are our children and most of them are hawkers, street traders, taxi drivers. Initially we took them as agitators but we never believe it would come to this level.

WHY ARE THE LEADERS NOT CONDEMNING ALL THESE ATROCITIES?

What you must know is that these children have never fought battles before. Some of them were not born when the war took place. The truth is that there is no leader that is behind this in the whole of Igbo land. The issue of Biafra doesn’t really come up. Biafra has become an old story. We are thinking of how to build a strong Nigeria, a United Nigeria.

What is there to be divided? Is it bread or salt? No one can say let’s divide a country.

For instance I Rochas who has schools in the northern part of this country in Socoto, Bauchi, Zariya, Yola, Jos,kano, Bauchi

The children are up to 15,000 where will I take them to? Why would I want to divide the country.

For me I stand for Nigeria and for the unity of Nigeria!

WHY DIDN’T WE HEAR FROM THE LEADERS CONDEMNING THIS ISSUE?

The reason. Is because people are afraid when they speak out they might go and kill members of their family. That’s the major problem but the leaders are talking.

We have problem with our leaders all over the country. The careless talk they make, the children take it very serious. Leaders will say Igbos don’t like Hausa, Hausas don’t like yorubas, yorubas don’t like Igbos and so on.... these kids are hearing it & sometimes when politicians want to be voted they also tell their youth that this tribe doesn’t like that tribe so they can gain cheap popularity.

SOME OF THE LEADERS IN THE NORTH ARE BACKING THE ISSUE OF DIVISION, WHAT DO YOU SAY?

Whoever says this doesn’t love the country. Some leaders want people to clap for them when they say their backing the Hausa or Muslims so they can gain the support of their people.

Where will that take us to as a nation? Nobody’s should talk in this way if we can come together as people it will be better for us.

WHAT WILL BRING THE END TO THIS CRISIS IN THE LAND?

In the first place, you should ask what is the problem of our country

Our problem is poverty and injustice and deceit that accompanies politics... that is our problem.

If we don’t do anything concerning this. You have not started. If you buy all the war equipments in the world and fill Nigeria it will not work unless you solve the issue of hunger and injustice. These young men are full of energy and all young men are full of energy if they don’t dispose it positively they will dispose it negatively.

WHAT WILL YOU SAY ABOUT APC IN NIGERIA?

There is no problem with APC if it’s by going with the name APC but there is a problem with the people in APC. APC is just a name like any other party. You can change the name to PPC and TPC.

The problem we have now is that APC never believed they can have this kind of problem. Our major challenge now is that the issue of Boko haram which did not start today - it has been a problem that we neglected over 40 years ago; where children are not going to school and they turn around to become Boko haram members - But now we have over 13.4 million children not going to school and nothing is being done about it. In the next 20 years, if nothing is done it will become a major problem for the president

That’s why I’m saying to Nigeria. Make hay while the sun shines.

Where this is not done we might have challenges in future. Let us carry along traditional rulers in the affairs of our nation because every young man comes from a community and the traditional ruler has the capacity to dictate and identify a good or bad youth in his community.

In 2017 during Rochas Okorocha's Administration , Sen Hope Uzodinma leads Delegations Of Senators and Fed Rep Members and other Igbo Elites to my House at Abuja , On How to rally round and Give unflinching and Unalloyed supports to Nnamdi Kanu on Biafra projects .

Hope Uzodinma convinced Us that Rochas Okorocha is working Fastidiously to install Emir in Igbo , just to mortgage us against okorocha .

It Astonished Me that the same Uzodinma is the one piloting plots against Nnamdi Kanu , whom he always visited almost every Weekend at Umuahia Abia State.

Do you think that Uzodinma will last .

The Inside Story of Ahmed Gulak's Murder....by Emmanuel Obioma

Fresh Facts have emerged on what led to the gruesome assassination of Alhaji Ahmed Gulak in the early morning hours of Sunday 30th May 2021 on his way to Owerri Airport

Alhaji Gulak, an APC Chieftain and former Political Adviser to Former President Goodluck Jonathsn was the man who masterminded the much acclaimed 'Ben Johnson way' that gave Gov. Hope Uzodinma, Imo APC's Governorship primaries ticket in 2019. Gulak was to run away from Rockview Hotel, Owerri in the early morning hours of the primaries back to Abuja to declare the results written and signed by himself in favour of Hope Uzodinma leaving behind other members of his committee who went ahead and conducted the primaries where Ugwumba Uche Nwosu was declared winner.

Credible sources have it that Hope Uzodinma undertook to pay ten billion naira to Gulak for the hachet job but ever since he got into power as Imo Governor via the schemings of Gulak and the Supreme Court, he has been avoiding him (Gulak).

The efforts to collect the money had reached a crescendo with Gulak's visit to Owerri few days ago. Protea Hotel, Owerri sources point that Imo Government House Protocol Department lodged Gulak in their facility upon arrival.

It was gathered that his meeting with Gov. Uzodinma on Saturday 29th May 2021 turned sour when he again failed to meet up his financial commitment to Gulak. At this point, Uzodinma persuaded Gulak to yield him more time considering the circumstances of insecurity in Imo and the attendant financial strain on the state government.

Frustrated and fuming Gulak was said to have stormed out of the meeting and returned to his hotel. In the early morning hours of Sunday 30th May 2021, Gulak had to pick a cab to head to Owerri Airport apparently leaving unannounced away from Gov. Uzodinma not knowing that he was being trailed.

Credible sources have it that Gov. Hope Uzodinma's S.A. on Special Duties, Chinasa Nwaneri and three other men were seen driving out in a hilux car from Concorde Hotel, heading towards Protea Hotel ( which is in the same area as Concorde Hotel) few minutes earlier before Gulak left the hotel with his cab. About 40 minutes later, the news came of the gruesome murder of Gulak along Umueze Obiangwu Road (in Ngor Okpala LGA of Imo State) near the Owerri airport.

Reports from Concord Hotel, Owerri have it that Chinasa Nwaneri has not returned to the hotel where he lives as at the time of filing this report since he left the facility at the early morning hours of Sunday 30th May 2021.

Whether this is a mere coincidence, a hatched job or a conspiracy theory, remains a riddle unsolved.
