HOW TO FIND BUYERS FOR YOUR FISH BEFORE THEY REACH MARKET SIZE (save this post)
One mistake many new fish farmers make is waiting until harvest before looking for customers.
Your fish have reached market size…
You enter WhatsApp:
“Fresh catfish available. Who wants to buy?” Crickets. 😂
Then you start reducing your price because the fish are eating every day.
Don't wait until harvest.
1️⃣ Start with people around you
Tell your neighbours, friends, colleagues, church members, family and other people within your community that you're raising fish.
Don't just say: "I sell fish.”
Tell them when you expect them to be ready and the sizes you expect.
---
2️⃣ Find restaurants and food vendors
Visit restaurants, bukas, hotels, pepper-soup joints and fish sellers around you.
Ask simple questions:
What size of catfish do you normally buy?
How many kilograms do you need?
How often do you buy?
Do you prefer live or processed fish?
What determines the price you pay?
Now you're not guessing what the market wants.
You're researching your market.
---
3️⃣ Build your WhatsApp customer list
Don't wait until harvest to start posting.
Post occasionally:
“Our fish are growing nicely. Harvest coming soon.”
Show the pond.
Show feeding.
Show progress.
When harvest approaches, announce the expected date and start taking genuine orders or reservations.
---
4️⃣ Don't depend on ONE buyer
This is where many farmers get trapped.
If one buyer knows you desperately need to sell 500kg of fish today, your bargaining position becomes weak.
Build several customer channels:
Households + restaurants + fish sellers + processors + direct consumers.
---
5️⃣ Ask buyers what they actually want
Maybe you're raising fish to 1kg because that's what you like.
Meanwhile, your local buyers prefer 700–800g.
Market research should happen before stocking—not after harvesting.
---
6️⃣ Keep your buyers
After every sale, save the customer's contact.
Ask:
“When will you likely need fish again?”
Follow up when your next batch is approaching market size.
That's how you gradually turn random customers into repeat customers.
---
AND HERE'S THE BIG LESSON:
Don't grow fish first and start looking for a market later.
Grow the market alongside the fish.
By the time your fish are ready, you shouldn't be asking: "Who will buy my fish?”
You should already know who you're going to call.
Your pond produces the fish.
Your market produces the money.
