One of the biggest challenges in many of our cities isn't just heavy rainfall, it's poor urban planning.
A good drainage system is essential, yet many communities either don't have one or have drainage channels that are inadequate. To make matters worse, some lands that naturally serve as flood plains or water channels are allocated for development when they should have been protected.
When buildings are erected on these areas, the water has nowhere to go. The result is flooding that destroys homes, disrupts businesses, damages roads, and affects people's daily lives.
Development should never come at the expense of proper planning. Before approving new estates or commercial projects, there should be proper environmental assessments, effective drainage infrastructure, and strict enforcement of building regulations.
Flooding is often preventable when planning is done right.
