Not only Russian and Asian countries are combating the dreaded African Swine Fever (ASF). Fears are that in Nigeria, almost two million pigs have died from ASF, three pig farmers lost their lives, following an unprecedented outbreak that destroyed the means of livings of hundreds of farmers.

Where possible, depending on the pig production system, isolation of a farm can be obtained by maintaining adequate distances between farms, by full fencing the herd and installing a closed entrance to the farm area.

Every visitor should be provided with specific clothes and footwear to be used and left on the farm.
Every visitor should be provided with specific clothes and footwear to be used and left on the farm.

Only pigs from trusted and certified sources should be introduced into the herd;
Special attention should be given to the management of animal transport, and to the cleansing and disinfection procedures of the vehicles and the loading/unloading area;
The number of suppliers for replacement stock should be limited. The health status of replacement stock should be evaluated before purchase;
During the quarantine period, clinical surveillance should be combined with serological and virological surveillance, as appropriate.
In cleaning and disinfecting swine vehicles, attention should be given to the truck body and the loading ramp.

Vehicles collecting dead animals represent a major risk for the transmission of the disease. These vehicles should not enter the farm, and pig carcasses have to be collected outside the fence or premises. Drivers have to strictly follow farm biosecurity protocols and they should not enter the holding.

Carcasses of domestic pigs and wild boar found dead in the infected areas should be processed and tested to detect the presence of ASF virus. Carcasses, discarded parts from slaughtered pigs should be disposed by incineration or burial. No part of any wild boar should be brought into a pig holding.

Vehicles used for transport of pigs should be cleaned and disinfected immediately after each time transport of animals takes place, and if necessary before any new loading of animals using disinfectants, and provide documentary evidence that these operations have been performed.
In cleaning and disinfecting the vehicles, attention should be given to the truck body, the loading ramp, the equipment that had contact with pigs, the driver’s cabin and the protective clothes/boots used during unloading.
Drivers should follow farm biosecurity protocols when handling animals and, as a rule, they should not enter into pig holdings.

Commercial pig holdings should be provided with storage basins, which allow manure treatment with disinfectants. Where necessary, the dispersion of pig slurry on agricultural lands should be avoided since the virus can be introduced into the environment infecting wild boar and free ranging pigs.

The primary route of transmission of ASF is by direct contact between infected and susceptible pigs. Therefore, in risk areas it is necessary to adopt specific measures to minimise the risk of introducing the disease into the herd by direct contact, especially from wild pigs.

PASTURE IN PIG FEEDING⁣

As the pigs are single stomach animal, they can digest only smaller quantity of pasture⁣
green forage/ leaves) than cattle or buffalo. Their capacity to utilize pasture is limited.⁣
Still pastures are useful for the pigs⁣
• It is cheaper.⁣
• It is a good source of vitamins and minerals.⁣
•It provides a major portion of the protein requirement of the animal.⁣
• It brings savings in grain consumption.⁣
• It Increases profit margin.⁣
• It keeps pigs healthier and productive.⁣

Good pasture can replace about 10-20% of concentrate. Percentage of pasture in pig ration should be less for piglets as well as for fattening pigs. Piglets cannot digest more fibrous feed, while fatteners cannot deposit high fat for weight gain. Pregnant and⁣
growing pigs and boars may be fed with more pasture.⁣
Pasture should be chopped into small pieces and boiled before feeding pigs. Boiling kills the parasites and germs available in the pasture and increase the digestibility.⁣

PIG FARMING SYSTEM

1. Free Range Pig Farming:

Free range pig farming is a method of farming husbandry where the pigs can run around outside on pasture/grasslands and roam freely for food, but the shelter must be provided for pigs move in and out, and move freely around the paddocks. Pigs need some special conditions, such as firm soil and mild climate, to be raised in this way. Free range system usually offers the opportunity for extensive locomotion and sunlight prevented by indoor housing system.
Because free range pig farming requires a great number of staff as pigs are exposed to all the elements and need constant care and attention, this kind of pig farming style is usually used in many smaller farms with a small number of pigs. But each pig needs a surprisingly large area of land to support it, so 2-4 pigs an acre should be the limit, which also makes the pasture/grassland have enough time to recover.

2. Natural Pig Farming:

Natural pig farming can be a compelling alternative to free range pig farming system, but they are different. Natural pig farming does not require a large area of land and pigs are fed by fresh fodder vegetables cultivated or cut where they grow naturally in wild. There are relevant facilities and some natural ways for heating and cooling to keep this system stable working in any climate. The number of pigs can be raised is considerably higher with natural pig farming, it is because pigs are kept in a more concentrated environment that never-the-less respects their need for space.

3. Free Farmed Pig Raising:

The sows are outdoors farmed in paddocks with shelter provided to protect them from the elements and special huts for farrowing. The sows can move their shelter to the paddocks freely without restriction. And once weaned, the piglets are raised in barns with no crates or stalls and are free to move around. The grower shed is fully open to the sun with feed and water available for 24 hours. This pig farming style is mainly applied in regions with soil types, consistent weather and a ready supply of straw and bedding.

4. Stall Free Pig Farming:

Sow stalls are used to confine individual sow in intensive pig production. These stalls are very restrictive and do not allow free and natural move. Stall free means that sows are all indoors and group housed in sheds and weaned pigs are finished under shelter in groups as well.Sow stalls are not used in pregnancy. When birthing, the sow will be moved to a farrowing crate that is for preventing piglets from being squashed by mother at birth, and also so the sows can receive their own food and water.

5. Outdoor Bred Pig Farming:

Pigs are born outside, in fields where they are kept until weaning; breeding sows are kept outside in fields for their productive lives (as free range standard). After weaning, the piglets move to deep litter housing for growing and finishing. Where soil types and climate are constraint, farmers can keep gestating sows in barns, in groups on deep straw bedding for a maximum of seven weeks at the start of each production cycle. The pigs are provided with food, water and shelter with generous minimum space allowances. And pigs are unable to perspire, so their ideal growing temp is 20-22℃ in this farming style.

6. Indoor Intensive Housing Pig Farming:

Indoor intensive housing is referred to factory farming, raising pigs in confinement at high stocking density. This system for pigs from birth to weaning and for lactating and weaned sows can hold large number of pigs. And generally it is managed on an all-in all-out basis, keeping pigs of similar ages in groups in a common environment. Current housing systems are continuously evolving to improve herd health, welfare and productivity. Food and water are supplied in place, and artificial methods are often employed to maintain pigs health and promote pigs growing, such as therapeutic use of antimicrobial agents, vitamin supplements and growth hormones.

The Dark Side of Farming:

As much as we encourage young people into farming, come armed with knowledge, it is not MMM, Ultimate cycler, a get rich quick scheme.

Farming is a good venture and can multiply your investments a thousand fold. However, it can also go bad, real quick.

Social media is full of stories of success in farming. Others are not farmers but will pose on farms to chase clout. Lol Farming is not rosy.

The risks in farming include:
Diseases, market flooding, high costs against low yields and ever changing climate.
Although we have successful stories, few negatives are posted. The pursuit for feeling successful and showing off on social media overshadows the daily failures.

Whenever losses strike, it is the very point at which we differentiate real farmers and "wannabe" farmers.
A real farmer will endure the risks, learn from them, pick up pieces and replan while staying focused on the goal. "Wannabe" farmer will abandon farming altogether.

Many farmers are quiet on the problems they face in farming. Success stories are good. But let us also show the newcomers what awaits them. Farming is set to create more jobs in due to ongoing layoffs.
However, if you don't have the 9 lives of a cat, think twice.

All crops and livestocks have their challenges. However, I wont bore you with details per crop and livestock. Let me shed light on a few selected ones. If I don't mention what you want to farm, don't think you are safe. Shock still awaits you. So come prepared.

Poultry Farming:
This is an interesting option. I know of someone who reared 2000 broilers, lost up to 1500 heads in a butch of 2000. Reared 500 layers but wasn't keen. At 7 months, only 126 were laying!! Remember, feeds for layers are the most expensive. A mere change in feeding program can cost you. Farmers buy day old chicks and by day 5, they have zero. All Dead!
One sick chicken in a flock can wipe out everything. You will get stuck with mature dying chickens with no buyer.

Maize Farming :

Here, timing is good if you need to fetch good profits. Seed companies selling fake seeds are the first frustration. You will plant seeds that wont germinate. If they do, they underperform. The bags mentioned as yield in those packages are a myth. They don't yield. A friend planted maize in 2019 with good timing. He could count the maize that germinated! He slashed everything and planted pumpkins!
If you get credible seeds, fake fertilizers await you. He bought 8 bags of NPK. After applying, one month later over 50% was still solid! Sand!!

Some unscrupulous sellers mix fertilizers with sand and repackage.
Some fertilizers starts dissolving into liquid few hours after you open. You store the opened sack only to find everything liquid and gone! You cant use that. It's your bill.

If you get good seeds and fertilizers, striga w**d strikes!! Striga w**d is a menace in maize farming. It can reduce your yield up to 80% if it attacks the whole farm.

Tomatoes Farming:

Don't be fooled by the red pictures of bumper harvests. Tomatoes can give you stroke.
This is a crop that is highly prone to various attacks. Viral, fungal and bacterial diseases that once they enter, no exiting. You will spend weeks spraying chemicals. Losses will be on your list. Any slight mistake ruins your harvest. Diseases attack at fruiting. This is also one crop that floods the market and price per kg can reduce by 80% in a flash. You will be stuck with crates upon crates of your bumper harvest and no interested buyer.

Cattle Farming

This is one area that is full of losses. Cattle feeding is one part that you will always complain about. Cows are gluttons. Some though high milk producers, they feed 24/7. Feeding machines. Labour intensive. You may Always get into issues with employees
Milk prices only favour milk processing companies. Farmers are just a conveyor belt in the grant scheme. You will also pour milk for lack of market due to excess supply. Interesting? Wait.
The milk cows are also very vulnerable to diseases. You need a standby vet on call. That thing can show signs of sickness in the evening and by morning its dead!
Then comes delivery complications. Most overfeed and the calf overgrows in the womb. Normal delivery becomes hard.

Floods can wreck havoc in your farm. You will get to the field and find all your precious plants that were glowing few hours ago swept away. Some find this and die of stroke or commit su***de. Water logging is also a serious issue. Increases soil acidity, reduce fertility.

Crops get stunted. Drainage is inevitable in farming. Ensure your farm has enough drainage if you are located in areas receiving heavy rains.
Live stock structures in such heavy rain areas need to be well built. Storms can kill your livestock. Check wind direction when constructing.
If you are keen on livestock, be keen on worms. Worms kill and cause stunted growth. Pigs, goats, chicken and cattle are the most vulnerable to worms. Most worms have a secondary parasite that is more lethal than the worm itself.

Market and Flooding :

Market for farm produce is a challenge to many farmers. This can send you parking on your first trial. Many farmers complain of absence of markets after harvesting. Understand your market. If you are not sure of the market don't farm. Market your produce. Farming is an investment like any formal business. Start marketing your produce even before you see it. Get contacts. Be careful with brokers. They are barriers to accessing markets but are also the key to getting your trusted customers. Don't harvest if you don't want brokers.

While using any chemicals be careful. A neighbour didn't read and follow instructions while spraying army worms on maize. He lost 4 acres. Everything burnt down. If you are spraying foliar, be keen. Too much of it burns the leaves. Some crops like melons require specific sprays.

Dry your produce well and use recommended preservatives if storing for long. Weevils are a menace in cereals. You can lose them 100%.

A real farmer must develop thick skin.
Many examples are out there of farmers encountering 100% losses or more.
Farming is not for the fainthearted get rich quick "wannabes".

HOW TO GENERATE PROTEIN FOR YOUR FEED FORMULA AT LITTLE OR NO COST.

Your pigs and poultry deep litters feaces are not waste, this can served as source of protein for your farm. Your pigs farm soak away is another angle to harvest from.

MAGGOTS CULTURING:

Get some of your used PKC bag and introduced this feaces placed the bag in the East to West direction to reduce the, effect of direct sun light on the substrate. The mouths of the bags will open to allow for optimum free flow of air.

INTRODUCTION OF FLIES:

Open in such away that flies will have free access to lay their eggs on it. The maggots will be generated under 1-2 hours. The continue wetting the substrate with water until maggot attained optimal size between 5-8 days within this period, they were being harvested.

HARVESTING AND PROCESSING OF MAGGOTS:

The harvest of maggots will be done between the 5th to 8th days after first contact of fly with the substrate.
Pour the maggots inside a big bowl and pour 5 times of water and sieve the water away and wash the maggots.

PREPARATION AND PRESERVATION FOR FOOD FORMULATION:

Pour hot water to the harvested maggots inside the bowl and kill them. Then pour into plastic baskets to enable the water drain off. The dead maggots are sun dry and then packed into air tight container for preservation.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

Research results has shown that maggot meal contains 47.1% crude protein, 25.3% fat, 7.5% crude fibre and 6.25% ash at dry matter level of 92.7%. The amino acid profile showed that maggot meal contains 17 amino acids among which are nine essential amino acids.
