Since lithium batteries have a BMS, why do they shut down completely?
A Battery Management System (BMS) continuously monitors cell voltage, current, temperature, State of Charge, and cell balance. Its job is not to keep the battery running at all costs, but to protect the cells. When it detects a dangerous condition, it can disconnect the battery completely. What looks like a battery failure may actually be the BMS preventing permanent damage.
The most common triggers are low voltage, excessive current, and short circuits. If a cell falls below its safe voltage limit, continued discharge can permanently damage it, so the BMS disconnects the load. If an inverter, motor, or appliance demands more current than the battery can safely provide, the BMS can disconnect the battery within milliseconds to protect the cells and wiring.
Temperature and cell imbalance are also critical. Excessive heat can accelerate battery degradation, while charging lithium batteries at very low temperatures can damage the cells. The BMS therefore monitors temperature and can stop charging or discharging when necessary. It also monitors individual cells and may disconnect the battery if a serious voltage imbalance develops.
A BMS shutdown does not necessarily mean the battery is dead. It may have entered protection or sleep mode. Remove heavy loads, check the battery and inverter fault indicators, and use the manufacturer’s approved charging procedure to wake the battery if required. Repeated shutdowns should be investigated because they can indicate incorrect inverter settings, excessive loads, temperature problems, communication faults, cell imbalance, or a battery fault. When a BMS shuts down, it may actually be protecting your investment.
