This hive stand is one of the unique sight in our apiary.

It houses two hives of bees from different species - stingless bees and honeybees.

The hive at the top contains a stingless bee colony that has taken over the hive. The hive was previously occupied by a weak colony of honeybees and they were chased away by the stingless bees.

The hive at the bottom houses the well known honeybees.

Both colonies albeit from different species are living in harmony in the same apiary and going about their daily activities.

Did you know that honeybees unlike other insects have two stomach?

Yes. They do and the second stomach performs an important function — nectar storage.

Honeybees have two stomachs; their normal stomach and a honey stomach or crop used for temporarily storing nectar before it's delivered to the hive.

When forager bees suck up nectar from flowers, they store this nectar temporarily in their honey stomach until it's filled and they retun back to their hive to regurgitate it to the house bees.

It would take a single bee collecting nectar from over 1,000 flowers just to fill the special expandable tummy up.

Honeybees are well known for their major products: honey.

However, unknown to many, honey is not the only products produced by honeybees. Honeybees produced a wide variety of bee products such as beeswax, propolis, bee venom, royal jelly etc.

These products are highly valued and command a higher price than even the popular honey.

World Food Safety day is celebrated on June 7 annually across the globe to highlight the importance of maintaining food standards. The day is aimed at prioritising food safety standards and to protect consumers from foodborne diseases.

The theme of this year’s World Food Safety Day 2023 is “Food standards save lives.” Most people depend on the information in the packaging of consumable items to know whether their food is safe. These food safety standards guide farmers and those who process food.

As beekeepers and honey producers, we always adhere to food safety standards during the honey harvesting, processing and packaging processes to prevent foodborne diseases.

Happy World Food Safety Day.

People are always confused about the actual colour of honey and are quick to dismiss any honey that doesn't match with their "perceived colour"

So what is the actual colour of honey?

In order to produce honey, forager bees go out in search of nectar from the various flowering plants in their nearby vicinity.

They would slurp up nectar with their proboscis and also take along pollen to feed to their younger ones as they move from one flower to another. The forager store the honey is a separate stomach (honey crop) different from their actual stomach. In the honey crop, the nectar is mixed up with some stomcah bacteria and the bees continue to forage on other flowers until her honey crop becomes filled up and she returns back to the hive.

So how is this important to the colouration of honey?

The colour of the honey is determined by what the bees feed on — nectar and pollen.

So, honey can come in a variety of colour from golden yellow, green all the way to black depending on their nectar and pollen source.

Also, in some cases, bees can feed on liquid from other sources apart from nectar like by-products from industries which can also affect the colour of their honey because bees will forage from any sweet liquid in their flight path for up to three miles.

So don't be quick to dismiss any honey or label it as fake or adulterated because it doesn't match a particular colour. Rather, original honey can come in a wide variety of wonderful colours just like the array of fruits available to us.

We are delighted to partake in celebrating this year's world environment day with the rest of the world.

Bees are integral in preserving environmental diversity as they are responsible for pollinating 80% of all flowering plants.

Although these wonderful creatures look tiny their impact is massive. It goes to show how we can also impact the environment positively if we put in the work.

The theme of the year's celebration is . This can only be achieved with our collective efforts.

"What's balling?"

The honeybee colony consists of three different caste members that perform varying functions.

The queen is the primal egg layer while the male drone lives just to mate with the queen and the busy worker bee spends the entirety of her life performing one task or the other until she paasses away from exhaustion.

When the queen's egg laying capacity reduces due to age, genetics or even injury, the colony has to do something about it because without new workers to carry out the hive activities the colony is doomed.

The queen despite her majestic position has to vacate her throne and be replaced by a more vibrant and fertile queen and unfortunately she can't just be told to leave, the colony has to commit regicide.

However, before this is done, the colony gets a "safety net" in place by building supersedures cell in which the condemned queen lays several queen eggs that will hatch after her departure and take over the mantle of leadership from their soon-to-be-deceased regent.

The workers achieve this by clustering tightly around her forming a tight ball (this is where the name balling was coined) around the doomed queen while vibrating their wings thereby increasing her body temperature causing her to overheat and eventually die.

When you open up a colony of bees, all the bees seem to look alike. However, they're not all the same.

The honeybee colony consists of three distinct members called castes:
1️⃣A single queen bee
2️⃣Tens of thousands of worker bees
3️⃣A few hundred drone
