How would you handle this situation?
Yesterday, I had a vivid recollection of an incident that occurred a few years back, around 2016. I had visited the market to purchase some items, and after making a purchase from my usual vendor, she handed me 500 naira in change.
Subsequently, I moved a short distance to another store to buy something worth 500 naira. However, when I tendered the 500 naira note for payment, the store owner declared it as fake and refused to accept it. I was taken aback, scrutinizing the note closely multiple times. I explained that I had just received the 500 naira as change from my previous transaction, emphasizing that it was not counterfeit. Despite my explanations, the store owner persisted in rejecting the money. I would have offered her another 500 naira, but regrettably, it's the sole cash I have on hand, aside from the 200 naira in my purse reserved for transportation fare.
Feeling perplexed, I returned to my original vendor and recounted the situation to her, expecting her to confirm the authenticity of the note. To my surprise, she asserted that the money she had given me earlier was not the same 500 naira note. I was utterly bewildered. My mind raced, and the situation began to escalate, attracting the attention of bystanders.
As tension mounted, a kind-hearted man approached and vouched for me, stating that he recognized me as a regular customer. He urged the store owner to resolve the matter amicably and advised against creating a scene. In that moment, I tried to respond, but my eyes welled up with tears. I couldn't fathom why my vendor was making false claims when she had indeed given me the money.
Unable to provide any further explanation to the growing crowd, I told the woman, "This will be the last time you see me here." With that, I left, clutching the disputed 500 naira note, while the curious eyes of onlookers followed my departure.
Now, I'd like to hear from you: How would you have handled this situation if you were in my shoes?
(Remember I am still your good vendor and partner for engagements and book publishing.)
