What is 16 Days of Activism all about?

The Theme of 2024: Time to Act Now

This year, UNITE campaign draws attention to the alarming escalation of violence against women under the theme, “Every 11 Minutes, one woman is killed and “UNITE to End Violence against Women.”

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an important global campaign that runs from November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10th ( International Human Rights Day).

This initiative began in 1991 ,launched by the Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) at Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA. The choice of these specific dates signifies the crucial link between violence against women and the broader spectrum of human rights.

Objectives of the Campaign:
Through this campaign, we aim to:

1. Raise Awareness ;Highlight the prevalence and impact of gender-based violence (GBV) on individuals and communities.
2. Mobilize Support ;Encourage communities, organizations, and governments to act against GBV.
3. Advocate for Change ;Promote policies and laws that safeguard the rights of women and girls, helping to prevent GBV.
4. Support Survivors ;Provide resources and services to those affected by GBV.

Key Focus Areas:
The 16 Days of Activism addresses pivotal themes such as:
- Violence against women and girls
- Domestic violence
- Sexual harassment
- Human trafficking
- Child marriage
- Female ge***al mutilation (FGM)

Throughout these 16 days, individuals, organizations, and governments globally engage in various activities designed to raise awareness and drive action against GBV. These efforts include:
- Social media campaigns
- Rallies and marches
- Workshops and training sessions
- Film screenings and discussions
- Fundraising initiatives
- Advocacy and lobbying for policy change

This campaign has evolved into a significant movement with thousands of voices uniting each year to make a difference.
