🚨 If you’re from the Southern Nigeria and you’re planning to visit Northern Nigeria, read this before you travel! 💕

Every year, thousands of people from the South South and South-East travel to the North for business, school, work, and new opportunities.

Here are a few things that will help make your stay easier:

1️⃣ Respect religion. In many Northern communities, religion is a very important part of daily life. If you don’t have anything good or respectful to say about someone’s religion, it’s better to remain silent. Silence is golden.

2️⃣ Dress modestly where appropriate. Some areas are more conservative than others, so take time to observe your surroundings.

3️⃣ Learn a few Hausa greetings. A simple “Sannu,” “Ina kwana,” or “Nagode” can open many doors. They’ll even be happy to help when they see you’re making an effort, especially because they know you’re new to the area. If you’re an NYSC corps member, many people will recognize that and treat you with respect. Be humble, be respectful, and you’ll often receive kindness in return. Children in your environment will gladly run errands for you as if you’re royalty and many mothers will love you too.

4️⃣ Don’t believe every stereotype. Meet people with an open mind and judge them by their character.

5️⃣ Respect local traditions and leaders. Every community has customs and values worth appreciating.

6️⃣ Avoid sensitive discussions unnecessarily. Religion, politics, and ethnicity can be emotional topics. Choose your words wisely.

7️⃣ Obey the law and respect security instructions. Always cooperate with the authorities whenever necessary.

8️⃣ Bargaining is common in many markets. Don’t be afraid to negotiate politely. ( Northerns are very friendly people)

9️⃣ Try the local food. Suya, Kilishi, Masa, Fura da Nono, Gurasa, Dambun Nama, Awara, dan wake tuwon shinkafa and many other Northern dishes are worth tasting.

🔟 Come with respect, work hard, and build genuine relationships. Many Southerners have lived, worked, and built successful businesses in Northern Nigeria for decades. Also northern Nigeria is a very good place to give your kids better African home training.

1️⃣1️⃣ If you’re a Christian, look for a church. Get to know the church community around you. It can become a source of encouragement, support, and friendship.

1️⃣2️⃣ Connect with your community. In many Northern cities, Southerners community or town union meetings are held regularly. Try to identify and register with one. In times of need, they can provide guidance, support, and assistance.

1️⃣ 3️⃣ Northern Nigeria is very diverse. Don’t assume everyone you meet is Hausa or Muslim. The North is home to many different ethnic groups and religions. You’ll meet Hausa, Fulani, Tiv, Berom, Jukun, Gbagyi, Bachama, Angas, and many others. You’ll also find indigenous Northerners who are Christians as well as Muslims, and many Northern Christians bear Biblical names. Avoid making assumptions get to know people as individuals.

1️⃣4️⃣ Be respectful when interacting with women. In many Northern families and communities, especially more conservative ones, men are expected to keep a respectful distance from other people’s wives and daughters. If a woman is selling groundnuts, kola nuts, drinks, or other items, buy what you need respectfully and avoid unnecessary chatting or behaviour that could be misunderstood. When in doubt, observe the local culture and always show respect.

❤️ Nigeria is home to all of us. Every region has something beautiful to offer when we approach one another with respect.

💬 Please the South South and South East people living in the North, what advice would you add to this?

💬 If you’re from the North, what would you like first-time visitors from the South South and South-East to know before visiting?

As A Security Intelligent Luminary, You Need To Know This

Imagine someone going around telling people:
"I am a witch."
"I have strong witchcraft powers."
"I can use juju to harm or help you."

Or imagine someone pointing at another person and saying:
"You are a witch!"
"You are using witchcraft to cause problems in this family."

It may look like "just talk" or village matter, but in Nigeria, the law takes it very seriously.

There is a law in the Criminal Code Act (which applies mostly in Southern Nigeria) called Section 210.
A similar law exists in the Penal Code (mostly in Northern Nigeria) as Section 216.

Section 210 of the Criminal Code makes it a crime for any person to:

- By words or actions, represent himself/herself as a witch or as someone who has the power of witchcraft.
(Example: Claiming "I am a powerful witch" or pretending to have supernatural powers.)

- Accuse any person of being a witch or of having the power of witchcraft.
(Example: Calling someone a witch or threatening to call them one.)

- Threaten to accuse someone of being a witch.

The law also covers related acts such as:
- Making, selling, using, or possessing juju, charms, drugs, or invocations connected to witchcraft.
- Dealing with human remains in ways linked to witchcraft or unlawful practices.

All these acts are treated as a misdemeanor

If found guilty, the person can be sent to prison for up to 2 years.

The law does not say that witchcraft itself is real or that practising it is a crime.
Instead, it focuses on two big problems:

1. False claims and self-representation: People who boast about having witchcraft powers can scare others, cheat them for money, or cause fear and confusion in the community.

2. Accusations: Calling someone a witch has caused serious harm in Nigeria, including violence, ostracism (being driven out of the community), abuse, and even death, especially against women, children, and the elderly. The law tries to stop these dangerous accusations that are often based on superstition rather than evidence.

The law protects public peace by stopping people from claiming supernatural powers they do not have and from wrongly labelling others as witches.

If you are not a witch → you have no right to go around claiming you have witchcraft powers.
And nobody has the right to accuse you of being a witch without proper evidence.

The law is there to protect people’s names, reduce fear, prevent violence, and maintain order in society.

KNOW THIS BEFORE YOU PANIC: Not Every Dispute is a Police Matter.

Many people are quick to run to the police station or worse, get threatened with arrest over issues that are strictly civil in nature. The truth? The police are empowered to prevent and detect crime, not to settle personal or commercial disagreements.

Here are situations where the Nigerian Police generally have NO lawful basis to arrest you:

• LANDLORD –TENANT DISPUTES
Failure to pay rent or disagreements over tenancy terms cannot justify arrest. Eviction and tenancy enforcement must follow due legal process, except where violence or a court order is involved.

• BREACH OF CONTRACT
When a party fails to fulfill contractual obligations, the remedy lies in litigation, not arrest.

• TRESPASS WITHOUT VIOLENCE
Entering property without permission, where there is no destruction or threat, is generally a civil trespass, not grounds for arrest.

• BUSINESS & PARTNERSHIP DISPUTES
Disagreements over profit-sharing, management, or dissolution of partnerships are commercial disputes, not criminal cases

• DEBT RECOVERY & FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS
Owing money, defaulting on a loan, or failing to complete a payment is not a crime. These are civil liabilities, not criminal offences. The police are not debt recovery agents.

• MATRIMONIAL & FAMILY DISPUTES
Issues like divorce, child custody, or spousal maintenance fall within the jurisdiction of the courts. They are domestic matters, not criminal complaints.

• DEFAMATION (Reputation Claims)
Allegations of damaged reputation are typically addressed through civil actions for damages, not criminal prosecution (except in very limited statutory circumstances).

• UNDELIVERED GOODS/SERVICES (No Fraud)
Where goods or services are paid for but not delivered, and there is no fraudulent intent, the matter remains civil.

• MORTGAGE & PROPERTY FINANCING ISSUES
Conflicts over loan repayment terms or foreclosure processes are resolved through civil proceedings.

• INHERITANCE & FAMILY PROPERTY CONFLICTS
Disputes over a deceased person’s estate belong in probate or family courts, not at the police station.

NOTE:
Don’t be intimidated or misled. Understanding the distinction between civil wrongs and criminal offences is your first line of protection.

Stay Intelligently and legally informed!
