WORLD MARITIME DAY 2026: A CALL FOR ACTIVATION OF EASTERN PORTS TO POWER MARITIME EXCELLENCE
In commemoration of World Maritime Day 2026, celebrated globally today, I, Engr. Abiye S. George, a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), join the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the global maritime community in celebrating the resilience of seafarers and the critical role of shipping and freight forwarding in global trade.
This year's IMO theme, "From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence", is a timely call to action for Nigeria. The theme underscores that regulations only deliver safer, cleaner and more resilient shipping when they are implemented where it matters most.
For Nigeria, powering maritime excellence must mean moving policy to practice in the Eastern Ports corridor.
For decades, Nigeria's maritime logistics has been dangerously over-centralized in Lagos, leaving strategic ports such as Port Harcourt, Onne, Onitsha River Port, Warri, Koko, Sapele, Calabar and Bonny under-utilized. This imbalance has created artificial congestion, inflated the cost of doing business, and deprived the Niger Delta of its natural blue economy advantage.
On this World Maritime Day, here are actionable logistics solutions to unlock this corridor:
1. From Port to Multimodal Hub: We must convert Eastern ports from mere discharge points to Integrated Multimodal Hubs, where cargo can move seamlessly across various modes of transportation.
2. Decongestion Through Incentivization: We urge the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the Nigerian Ports Authority to implement a differential tariff regime and a 48-hour fast-track clearance window for vessels and cargoes using Eastern Ports to deliberately divert traffic.
3. Policy to Practice - One Engineering Architecture: We call for a unified Engineering Development Architecture for Eastern Ports focusing on sustained channel dredging, modern navigational aids, and improved maritime security.
"The Blue Economy is not a new or future concept for us; it is our history. World Maritime Day reminds us that our creeks, rivers and coastline are infrastructure, not barriers. If we power maritime excellence in the South-South, we will decongest Lagos, create thousands of jobs for our youths, and restore the entire Niger Delta as the maritime heartbeat of Nigeria."
Happy World Maritime Day.
