CONTROVERSIAL MARKETING also known as Shock Marketing is a tactic or campaign where a brand offends it's audience by not using the norms or disregarding the norms of social and personal values and morals to promote a brand/product.
Thereby creating debates, disussions and buzz around a particular brand/product, which is definitely the aim. This creates engagement between the brand and it's audience and grows the popularity of the product/brand if handled properly.
For those of you that's been trying so hard to get the desired attention for your brand, Controversial marketing might just be a way to get that. But it comes with its own rules that must be obeyed or else you might damage your reputation and that of the brand.
TIPS FOR CREATING CONTROVERSIAL CAMPAIGNS FOR MARKETING:
1. Choose the controversy that's right for your brand. It should be debatable so as to create a high ceiling buzz among your audience and your general social media space.
2. Make sure you connect the controversy to your brand. Take note that today's consumers like to relate to witty contents that speaks directly to them.
3. Have a crisis management plan to handle any backlash. Best believe you will have them coming and how you handle that matters and will decide the growth of your brand. If handled badly then it fails but when handled properly your aim is achieved. In other words, have a thoughtful and prepared response ready to go.
So before you take that controversial route to help promote your brand, please ask yourself "what can this do for my brand? Can I handle the backlash?" Cos you will definitely get some.
