From Yekosa Farms to Local and International Markets

Yekosa Masa shea butter, produced by Yekosa Farms and identified by batch number AF-SB-YKF-0826-01, is now available in local and international markets as a cosmetic ingredient.

Beyond the sales, what feels good is knowing that shea butter can be traded in a more traceable way—one that helps buyers learn about the producers behind the product and gives greater recognition to the women and communities sustaining this tradition.

At Afrik Fair, we believe traceability can do more than document a product. It can help make the people and traditions behind it more visible in the market.

A 250g Sample: Small Order or Big Opportunity?

When a buyer requests a small sample of your agricultural product for laboratory analysis, don't judge the opportunity by the quantity alone.

The buyer may be evaluating your product before considering a larger order. Testing can help establish whether it meets their requirements, though a successful result does not guarantee a sale.

Afrik Fair recently dispatched samples of unrefined shea butter, dried hibiscus flowers and dried split ginger for laboratory analysis in the UK.

The lesson for agricultural export startups: A small sample request could be the first step towards a bigger commercial opportunity.

Take it seriously. Understand the costs. Prepare for the next step.

When you are buying shea butter, don't always start with:

“How much is 1kg?”

Price is important. MOQ and location are important too.

But other questions deserve equal attention, especially when buying shea butter for cosmetics, soap production, resale or export.

Ask:

“Can I see the COA?”
“What is the FFA result?”
“Has it been tested for heavy metals?”
“Is it genuinely unrefined?”
“Can you provide the TDS and SDS?”
“Is the batch traceable?”
“Is it suitable for food use or cosmetics?”
“Where was the shea sourced and how was it processed?”

The price tells you what you are paying.

These questions help you understand what you are actually buying.

At Afrik Fair, we believe better questions lead to better buying decisions and encourage greater transparency in agricultural trade.

So the next time you enquire about shea butter, don't ask only:

“How much is a kilogram?”

Also ask:

“What can you tell me about this batch?”

How Afrik Fair is supporting Nigeria’s shea nut policy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s temporary ban on the export of raw shea nuts is aimed at encouraging more local processing and value addition within Nigeria’s shea industry.

At Afrik Fair, our work in the shea value chain supports this direction through practical activities such as:

• Identifying shea-producing communities such as Yekosa Masa in Lavun, Niger State
• Working with local shea nut sellers and processors
• Commissioning shea butter production within producing communities
• Supporting the local purchase and processing of shea nuts
• Applying quality controls, including laboratory testing for FFA and heavy metals
• Preparing shea butter for premium local and export markets

The more shea butter we can sell through Afrik Fair, the more we can buy, commission, and process from shea-producing communities.

In this way, increased market demand can support more local processing and value addition.

For Afrik Fair, this is one practical way to support the policy.

Traceability is More Than a Batch Number.

Our Yekosa Masa Shea Butter Batch, AF-SB-YKF-0826-01, is linked to the women-led producer group named YekosaFarms, the community, the sourcing process, and the processing journey behind the product.

Through our work with Yekosa Farms in Niger State, we are documenting more of what happens before the shea butter reaches the market — from the sourcing of the shea nuts to processing and movement through the supply chain.

This gives us more information about the shea butter we trade and the people behind it.

Nigeria at 66

As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, we reflect on the people behind our agricultural products — the farmers and producers whose work contributes to what Nigeria produces.

For us, one important part of Nigeria’s agricultural future is market access.

Because producing is only part of the journey.

There is also the opportunity to help producers:

• Reach more reliable buyers
• Access wider markets
• Build relationships with buyers who value quality and consistency
• Find better opportunities for their products

Through our work at Afrik Fair, we hope to contribute, in our own way, to creating fairer market access for Nigerian agricultural producers.

More markets. Better opportunities. Greater possibilities for our producers.

What does sustainable agricultural trade really mean?

It should mean that the people who do the work also benefit from the trade.

A farmer may cultivate a farm without owning the land or the crop. Was the labour fairly paid?

And when the crop moves through an aggregator, manufacturer or exporter, how much of the value reaches the people who produced it?

This is why traceability matters.

It should tell us not only where a product came from, but who was involved and how they benefited.

This is what we have just implemented with our latest traceable shea butter batch from Yekosa Masa, Lavun, Niger State.
