EXPLAINED: How to build work experience
Work experience can help you identify what you enjoy doing and what you don't, allowing you to make informed career decisions.
Oxford University's Careers Service adviser Callum Buchanan reveals how to get the most out of work experience ⬇️
1. Internships provide practical work experience and enable you to network with professionals in your desired industry.
2. Part-time jobs can be an excellent way to gain work experience while studying. They can range from retail, hospitality, and administrative roles, and they provide opportunities to develop your transferable skills and build your professional network.
3. Volunteering can be a great way to gain experience, especially if you are interested in the non-profit or charity sector. You can learn new skills, work with different people, and gain valuable experience for your CV.
4. Extracurricular activities can help develop your skills and showcase your interests to potential employers. These can include joining a society, student club, or taking on a leadership role within your university.
5. Freelancing provides opportunities to work on projects for clients and gain practical experience in your desired field. There are many platforms that allow freelancers to find work opportunities, build their portfolio, and develop their skills.
