A CLASSROOM CAN BECOME A PLACE OF FEAR OR A PLACE OF GROWTH.
Two learners may sit in the same classroom, listen to the same lesson, and have completely different experiences.
One may feel safe enough to ask questions, make mistakes, and try again.
The other may remain silent because the fear of being laughed at is greater than the desire to understand.
The difference is not always intelligence.
Sometimes, the learning environment plays an important role.
When learners are repeatedly humiliated, they may become reluctant to participate. When they experience respect, constructive feedback, and appropriate support, they may become more willing to engage with challenging tasks.
This is why emotional safety matters in education.
It does not mean removing discipline, avoiding correction, or allowing unacceptable behaviour.
It means creating an environment where learners can be corrected without being humiliated, challenged without being intimidated, and held accountable without being devalued.
A disciplined classroom does not have to be a frightening classroom.
Teachers can maintain high standards while treating learners with dignity.
Remember, learners do not only experience the content you teach. They also experience the environment in which you teach it.
The emotional environment is part of the lesson.
