Would you call your CEO by his first name?

A recent moment involving Tony Elumelu has Nigerians debating workplace etiquette, hierarchy and the question of whether “formal” and “modern” can exist in the same workplace.

But perhaps the bigger lesson isn't whether she should have said “Tony” or “Mr Elumelu.”

It's this:

Professionalism isn't just knowing the rules. It's knowing when the context changes.

Your workplace might have a first-name culture.

That doesn't mean every room, audience or situation carries the same level of informality.

That's where social intelligence comes in.

So, honestly: if your CEO told you to call him by his first name, but you met him at a formal corporate event, what would YOU call him?

A. Tony
B. Mr Elumelu
C. Sir
D. It depends

Tell us why.

Not every business problem needs a new employee.

Sometimes, you don't need to hire.

You just need the work done.

That’s the conversation on this week’s .

For many SMEs, hiring full-time for work that is temporary, seasonal, or specialised can quietly turn into unnecessary overhead.

The smarter question isn't:

“Who should we hire?”

It’s:

“What does the business actually need right now?”

Sometimes the answer is a full-time employee.

Sometimes it’s outsourcing.

Know the difference, and you can build leaner without building weaker.

Save this for the next time you're about to post a job vacancy.
