“When I was a child, I came home from playing soccer, Mom was always laughing or was happy. But one day I came and she was crying. Then I saw my brother Roberto. He immediately hugged me and led me to the bathroom so we could be alone. There he told me something that he did not understand at the time: 'There was an accident and DAD JUST DIED.'
That didn't make sense. What does this mean? When will he come home? How can it be that Dad is gone and never comes back?

Dad always told me: 'You will play soccer creatively.' He was the one who told me that he always felt free on the court, that he just played with the ball. He always believed in my talent more than anyone else in the world. When Roberto my brother started playing professional football with Gremio, he always told everyone: 'Roberto is good, but wait until you see his younger brother, he's incredible.'

Dad was my superhero, he loved soccer so much that after working in the boat shop all week, he went to work as a security guard at the Gremio stadium on the weekends. How can it be that he will never see him again? He couldn't understand what Roberto was saying to me.

I didn't feel sad right away, that came later, a few years later I understood that Dad would never come home. But I did understand that every time I have a ball at my feet, DAD IS THERE WITH ME ". 😢

So I had this experience with this little vulcanizer today.

This morning while cycling, I had a flat tire and had to trek a long distance to find a vulcanizer to repair it.

The vulcanizer, a mature man, told me he doesn't repair bicycles. Well, I saw trailer tires there. So I left in peace.

After walking a short distance, that was when I found this little boy who is an apprentice. He was the only one sitting in front of his vulcanizing machine.

I asked if he repairs bicycles and he said yes.

I handed him the bike so he could check my tire.

"Oga it is 150." He spoke in Hausa.

"I have 100 naira."

He shook his head.

"No 150 last. It is according to the patch."

I told him to check it.

"I will give you 100 naira." I insisted.

And while I found a place to sit, I told him.

"I have 200 naira with me. But I want to use the 100naira change to buy garri so I can drink this afternoon."

He was silent all through.

When he finished repairing my tire, I handed him money and he refused.

I asked him why.

He said to me.

"Garri is 60naira for a cup. And I will need kuli kuli and sugar for my garri. So I should take the money so I can buy two cups of sugar and kuli kuli."

I looked at him.

Shock registered all over my face.

I smiled and he smiled too.

I asked if he has eaten.

He said he hasn't but when his oga comes he will give him money for food.

I ordered a plate of rice for him to eat.

Gave him 2,100 naira.

And I said to him.

"The 100 naira is for your work. This 2k is a gift from me to you because of your good heart. When you get home, give it to your mother and tell her what happened. Tell her I said she should buy you something special. Remember don't stop doing good."

The boy smiled and thanked me.

He said to me in Hausa language.

"My mother always tell me to help my friends when I can."

I rubbed his head and rode off.

The little kindness you do comes with a secret reward.

Don't forget to show a little kindness in 2023.

My name is Praises Chidera Obiora and I am the best at what I do.

The Origin Of ‘Ìyàwó’....The Yoruba Word For Wife!!!

It is unknown to many speakers of the Yorùbá language that the original Yorùbá word for wife is ‘aya’ and not the commonly used ‘Ìyàwó’.

Back in the early years of the Yorùbá people, the word “ Iyawo “did not have a place in the Yorùbá language not until an incident brought about its coinage and usage. Old Nigeria present you the origin of the Yorùbá word Ìyàwó .

Origin of the Yorùbá word Ìyàwó:
Long ago in Yorùbá land, a beautiful princess and daughter of the first king of Iwó town named Wúràọlá was in the quest of getting herself a patient, tolerant and well mannered husband.
Strong and good looking men, the likes of Sàngó, Ògún and others, had already traveled to Iwó town to seek the hand of Wúràọlá in marriage but left not with a wife but uncontrollable anger. Wúràọlá had been rude to everyone of them. In fact, she hurled insults and curses at her suitors which made them all leave on the same day they arrived the town of Iwo because they couldn’t tolerate her bad behaviors.

Ọ̀rúnmìlà, a good looking man, also journeyed to Iwó in the bid to win the hand of Wúràọlá in marriage. But before he set out, he had already consulted Olódùmarè , the supreme being, through Ifá . Olódùmarè revealed to Òrúnmìlà that he must be patient with Wúràọlá and endure her behaviors no matter how bad they are in order to succeed in the quest of marrying Wúràọlá .

When Òrúnmìlà got to the palace of the king of Iwó, he was greeted with a hiss and scornful look by Wúràọlá. The unperturbed Òrúnmìlà smiled and returned her greetings with kind and sweet words and also presented gifts to the king.

Òrúnmìlà stayed in Iwó for seven days which can be described as nothing but a hell on earth. Wúràọlá didn’t serve Òrúnmìlà water let alone food. She insulted the goodness out of Òrúnmìlà but he stayed calm and smiled at her. He even smiled when she used his opon ifa (divination board) as firewood and when she took his pouch (àpò ominijekun) from him. Though, Òrúnmìlà boiled with rage, still, he didn’t show it or leave Iwo according to the instructions of Olódùmarè .
On the sixth day of Òrúnmìlà's stay in Iwó town, the king of Iwó gave Wúràọlá in marriage to him after concluding that he is a patient, kind and tolerant man suitable to marry his daughter. Meanwhile, Wúràọlá's bad behaviors were planned to test her suitors so as to get her a husband with good manners and temper. She was a lovely, caring and well behaved lady. Òrúnmìlà was glad that he heeded to the instructions of Olódùmarè and on the seventh day, he and Wúràọlá journey back to his town.

Òrúnmìlà was welcomed and praised by his townspeople for his achievement. When they asked him about Wuraola, his wife, he responded, “Ìyà tí mo jẹ ní Iwó” (my sufferings in Iwó town ) That was how wives became known as Ìyà-Iwó (sufferings in Iwó ) and now Ìyàwó . So men don't be afraid or surprise by what you experience daily, it started ages ago

IGBAJA, HOME OF THE HIGHLANDERS

Igbaja is a town in Ifelodun area of Kwara state. It is an Igbomina settlement. It is by and large like most other Yoruba town and villages. Its founders were clever hunters and warriors who without a knowledge of geography, understood topography. Igbaja is built on a plateau such that whatever is your direction of approach, you're band to climb to climb up and up until you're almost fa**ed. As you're on verge in the top. Igbaja come to view in all its specific splendour. No invading army would think of attacking such a strategically placed town. Indigenes could definitely spot such intruders from afar. Another very important advantage of settling on an hilltop is availability of water which is the source of life. Igbaja is surrounded by valleys which apart from security ensures endless supply of water in days. One could fetch water from a number of streams. We had Iladan, lago, Odo Agbaja, Mangoro, Ayeodi etc

The paramount ruler of Igbaja is Kabiyesi, the Elese of Igbaja land who happens to be a first class Oba in Kwara state.
His rulership extends from Irese land to the whole of Igbaja district.
