When a crisis happens, safety is not the time to improvise.

The recent flooding across Nigeria is a difficult reminder that emergencies can disrupt much more than roads and buildings. They can affect our homes, workplaces, movement, health and ability to make safe decisions.

As HSE professionals, we know one important principle:

Preparedness saves lives.

During periods of flooding or other emergencies:

• Pay attention to official warnings and act early. NEMA continues to advise people in flood-prone areas to heed alerts and move to safer, higher ground when necessary.

• Do not drive or walk through floodwater. What looks shallow may be moving faster or deeper than it appears, and floodwater can contain debris, sewage, chemicals and electrical hazards.

• Treat electricity as a serious hazard. Stay away from fallen power lines and avoid electrical equipment when you are wet or standing in water.

• Have an emergency plan. Know your evacuation route, emergency contacts and where you can move to if your home or workplace becomes unsafe.

• Look out for people around you. Children, older adults, people with disabilities and anyone who may need assistance should be considered in emergency planning.

And for organisations, safety should not stop at the office gate.

A strong HSE culture is not just about preventing incidents when everything is normal. It is about building the knowledge, systems and leadership needed to protect people when circumstances are not normal.

A certified rigger with 3 years' experience often out-earns a fresh graduate. Most professionals underestimate this entirely because most professionals don't know what "the trades" actually cover anymore.
