You've been hearing about lithium and tubular batteries but do you know their actual function and the difference between the two???
Here's a breakdown for you 👇🏾
1. Chemistry & Build*
- *Lithium battery*: Usually LiFePO4 these days. Sealed, no liquid inside, uses lithium iron phosphate cells.
- *Tubular battery*: Lead-acid. Liquid electrolyte + tubular positive plates. Needs water topping sometimes.
*2. Lifespan*
- *Lithium*: 3000 - 6000 cycles. 5 to 10+ years typically. Degrades very slowly.
- *Tubular*: 1200 - 1800 cycles. 3 to 5 years typically if well maintained.
*3. Depth of Discharge (DoD)*
- *Lithium*: You can use 80% - 95% of the capacity. A 100Ah lithium gives you ∼90Ah usable.
- *Tubular*: Best to use only 50% - 60%. A 200Ah tubular gives you ∼100-120Ah usable. Go deeper and you kill it fast.
*4. Charging*
- *Lithium*: Charges 3x - 5x faster. Doesn’t care about partial charging. Very efficient ∼95-98%.
- *Tubular*: Slower to charge. Needs full charge cycles often. Efficiency ∼80-85%. Hates being left half-charged.
*5. Maintenance*
- *Lithium*: Zero maintenance. Sealed, no watering, no acid fumes.
- *Tubular*: Needs distilled water every 2-4 months. Must be kept upright and ventilated because of gas.
*6. Weight & Size*
- *Lithium*: Much lighter and smaller for the same usable energy.
- *Tubular*: Heavy and bulky. A 200Ah tubular can be 50kg+
*7. Cost*
- *Lithium*: Higher upfront.
- *Tubular*: Lower upfront.
But per kWh over lifetime, lithium usually wins because it lasts longer and you use more of it.
*8. Performance*
- *Lithium*: Stable voltage till almost empty. Handles high loads better. Works fine in heat but needs a BMS to protect from extreme heat/cold.
- *Tubular*: Voltage sags as it discharges. Performs better in heat than lithium, but struggles with very high current draws.
