GOLD GIRL
CHIOMA EMMANUEL – CEO DULZURA FACES
Chioma Emmanuel, the fierce and pretty Biochemical/Chemistry Technology Student of the University of Port Harcourt who is the only girl in a family of five shares her story with the GOLD Initiative. -
"I am the CEO of Dulzura Faces, a beauty brand which deals with the entirety of facial beauty, ranging from different kinds of makeovers (glam, bridal, everyday look etc) to wigs and production of beauty products which is about to be kicked off.
I have always heard that the start-up stage of a business or brand is not always rosy as the logos seem; I can say there are some truths to this statement. The Dulzura idea had always been there for a long time but what wasn’t there was the courage to start up. Often times I thought to myself “Girl, you are going into something which a lot of people are into” and when those thoughts would come; I will either feel discouraged or think of a way to make mine stand out. And for a long time, the former always prevailed till about last year.
I had a conversation with someone who believed in this dream and in the course of the conversation the name DULZURA was born. Initially I wanted a cliché thing but that exceptional side of me was stirred during the conversation.
I will not say it has been very easy being a student and chasing my dream at the same time, sometimes I get contracted for a job but my timetable won’t let me “shine” but I discovered that passion serves as a third hand that makes the weight slightly less burdensome.
It is in the records that I do excellent makeovers and I was self taught. The testimonies I get from my clients and customers are amazing, and they always come back. My support system (friends who encourage me) is very strong and I am grateful for that. There were times when I listened to discouraging statements and it took a heavy toll on me, so much so that I couldn’t even draw a proper brow. Now, I’ve learnt to accept criticism with a smile and see it as something intended to push me out of my comfort zone and bring out the best in me. I mean, there is so much more I can be and do as a beautician and like I stated earlier, passion is my third hand.
Asides my brand and the pursuit for vogue, I am also very particular about values. I have a senior partner, The Holy Spirit. I have values which I uphold. I detest dishonesty and I shun arrogance. I am a Christian, a child of God, a very positive person who believes I can do anything I lay my hands on.
If I were to be a plant, I will be cactus. Cactus because I can survive in the toughest condition and I can’t be messed around with. I am pretty but I’m prick. The future is truly bright as my team and I work and looking forward to the production aspect of our brand.
My advice to anyone growing a brand like me or just doing business at different levels is; always put in your best even when you are being criticized. Do not see critics as haters or plain negative people, keep growing continuously, keep getting better at what you do, for there’s room for you at the top. If and when you feel discouraged, stay around people who will encourage. Above all, stay joyful, joy breeds productivity.
