A shekarar 1975, Janar Yakubu Gowon, shugaban kasa na lokacin, ya yi gwajin motar farko da aka yi a gida Najeriya, wato PAN-1, a sabon kamfanin da aka kafa na Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) a Kaduna. Wannan wani muhimmin bangare ne na kokarin bunkasa masana'antu a Najeriya a shekarun 1970, da nufin bunkasa masana'antu a cikin gida da rage dogaro da motocin da ake shigowa da su daga waje.
An yi tunanin kafa masana'antar hada motoci a shekarar 1969 a karkashin gwamnatin Gowon. An tsara wannan kamfani tare da jarin gwamnatin Najeriya mafi yawa na kashi 35%, jihar Kaduna 10%, bankin bunkasa masana'antu na Najeriya kashi 5%, da Peugeot Citroen (Faransa) 40%.
Janar Gowon ne ya kaddamar da kamfanin a Kaduna a ranar 11 ga Maris, 1975, kuma ya fara aiki a hukumance bayan kwanaki uku kacal a ranar 14 ga Maris. An fara samar da samfura kamar Peugeot 404, 504, da 505. Motar Peugeot 504 ta yi fice sosai a tsakanin 'yan Najeriya, inda ta samu lakabin "Motar Najeriya" saboda saukin farashi da amincinta.
Faɗuwar farashin mai a duniya a shekarun 1980, da ƙara yawan shigo da motocin da aka yi amfani da su masu rahusa, da rashin kulawa ya haifar da koma baya ga kamfanin PAN.
A cikin 2007, a matsayin wani ɓangare na shirin gwamnati na sake fasalin kamfani, PAN ya koma mai zaman kansa, tare da ASD Motors ya fito a matsayin sabon mai saka hannun jari. A shekarar 2016, rukunin kamfanonin Dangote da gwamnatin jihar Kaduna sun zama manyan masu saka hannun jari, inda s**a mayar da sunan kamfanin Dangote Peugeot Automobiles Nigeria (DPAN). Tun daga lokacin kamfanin ya sake faɗaɗa.
