When Asake signed with YBNL, he claimed he didn't have an entertainment lawyer to help him review his contract because of his trust in Olamide, his boss. He believed Olamide had his best interests at heart, but looking at his recent actions, it seems that decision might have backfired.

Fast forward three years later — Asake has gone silent on social media, unfollowed everyone, deleted his posts, and missed all major December shows, including his boss’s event. Rumors are circulating that he’s about to split with YBNL, but because of the contract he signed without legal advice, leaving might not be so easy.

The lesson here is simple: No matter how much you trust your record label boss, always hire your own lawyer. There are hidden clauses in contracts that won’t make sense until they play out in real life.

A record label can either elevate or destroy your career, and your success depends more on your negotiation skills than the label itself.

Remember These Rules:

a. There’s no such thing as a bad contract — you get what you negotiate.
b. Record labels are not charities; they’re businesses looking to profit.
c. The record label’s lawyer is not your lawyer. Always hire your own lawyer.
d. What happens during your deal will shape your future career.
e. Never sign out of excitement. Understand every clause first.

Below are a list of essential clauses every upcoming artist should demand and realistic compromises that labels might accept.

1. Ownership and Control of Masters (Master Rights)
2. Term and Options (Contract Duration)
3. Creative Control
4. Royalty Rates and Escalation
5. 360 Deal (Revenue Sharing)
6. Sunset Clause
7. Marketing and Promotion Commitment
8. Touring and Merchandise Rights
9. Audit Rights
10. Exit Clause

When I started, people compared me to Wizkid. He was huge—his style, his swag, everything about him was unique. I knew I couldn’t ride his wave; I had to find my own sound and create my own identity. I told myself every morning, "There’s someone better out there, so I can’t afford to slack."

At 13, I formed a small music group with my friends in high school. We made music just for fun. There was this studio in Lagos I used to visit to watch other artists. One day, I boldly asked the studio owner to help set up my computer for music production. I started teaching myself music production on YouTube. Back then, I wasn’t even singing.

We released two music videos, but they flopped. I was frustrated, questioning if music was really for me. Seeing Wizkid thrive made me doubt myself even more. But I wasn’t greedy—I asked them to show me the way they do things. People in the industry, like Wande Coal, Wizkid and Don Jazzy, helped me a lot. I went to everyone and shared my vision, they gave me their own ideas on how to do things to improve.

Eventually, I moved to America for a year. That time abroad changed my perspective. When I returned to Nigeria, I decided, “I’m not going back.

Don Jazzy and D'Banj were the first to show me that African music could be lucrative. I was 14 when they came to Atlanta for a video shoot. It was 2008, and they were living the high life, shooting a video with Snoop Dogg and spending $20,000 at the club in one night. That experience opened my eyes. After witnessing it all, I returned to Nigeria determined to make it big. And I Became the Biggest!" - Davido

Hmm... Wizkid's Influence is undeniably large. 🦅

"P-Square helped and made J-Martins and Bracket big. May-D was destined to faîl because of grēed." __ Jude Okoye, manager of Square Records 😳‼️

"May-D needs to stop blaming P-Square for his failure and making it seem like P-Square didn't help anyone in their prime. We helped J-Martins and when he became big, we let him go and be independent. And Bracket came and we helped them and when they became big, we let them go.
But with May-D, he was different. We decided to form a group with May-D so he could remain at Square Records foreover. But just when we were about to sign him, he demanded that we give him the same amount of money and cars that P-Square had. Something that it took P-Square 8 years to get, he wanted it in no time. Then I told him that we can't give him that kind of money unless he works for it and he left. We never signed him." Jude Okoye

Manager of P-Square, Jude Okoye calls out May-D for claiming that P-Square stopped Akon from signing him.

Apparently when P-Square told Akon that they had signed May-D, the contract wasn't done yet and May-D turned down the contract with P-Square thinking that Akon will sign him but Akon refused to sign him on grounds that he can't sign an entitled grēedy artiste who will bētray him and leave when he eventually becomes big without generating enough profits. 😩

Always becareful with the decisions you make so you don't end up blamîng people for your faîlures tomorrow 🙌
