'WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT GRANITE AND GRAVEL GRADES'
Definitions
GRANITE is blasted & crushed rock which is graded into desired sizes in a quarry site.
GRAVEL is a soil strata of sand but has bigger stones.
In construction, granite is approved over gravel for the following reasons:
1. Granite has little or no impurities which can affect the quality of concrete while Gravel has various impurities from chemical impurities to material impurities
2. Granite has relatively equal sizes of stones while Gravel is a mix of many sizes.
3. Granite can be got in large quantities, Gravel deposits are limited.
4. Granite makes stronger concrete than Gravel because of its high locking capability.
5. Granite gives concrete an appealing look than Gravel
Sizes of Granite in market for general purpose use (there are bigger sizes that are for special uses)
1. Three-Quarter inch granite: can be used for foundation, columns (pillars), lintel, beams, suspended slabs (decking), etc.
2. Half inch granite: can be used just as three-quarter inch
3. Rice (market parlance): this can only be used for structures that will not carry much load, e.g. flooring of building premises, base for lightweight equiment, production of interlocking stones and kerbs, etc.
Quantities available in market:
All the sizes can be got from the nearest quarry to you in tonnes, viz, 15tonnes and 30tonnes.
If you need quantities lesser than these, contact your local material supplier. Local suppliers have them supplied in 7tonnes or in cement sacks.
For clarifications or consultation on the above, DM for attention.
