Sub-Saharan Africa faces one of the most challenging economic environments in years, marked by a slow recovery from the pandemic, rising food and energy prices, and high levels of public debt. One of the most urgent issues confronting the region is the need to tackle decade-high levels of inflation—which are devastating incomes and food security—while also supporting growth. Rising conflict and violence across the region exerts a dampening effect on economic activity, with climate shocks poised to exacerbate this fragility. One of the key consequences of Africa's economic stagnation is that income inequality has increased, while it has decreased worldwide. Sub-Saharan Africa was severely harmed when government revenue declined from 22% of GDP in 2011 to 17% in 2021.

Nigeria has the potential to become the hub of Africa's automotive industry. Home to an estimated 170 million people. With a population of close to 170 million and a GDP of US$493 billion in 2015, Nigeria is the most populous country with the largest economy in Africa. Despite the current economic challenges facing the country due to low oil prices and a weakened currency, Nigeria still reveals robust economic growth of 2-4% in the medium term. Owing to the lack of domestic vehicle production, Nigeria is highly dependent on imports to meet its domestic demand. In 2014, passenger vehicles constituted the second-largest import category after petroleum oils or bituminous minerals. Overall automotive related imports stood at US$6.9 billion (passenger vehicle imports: US$2.9 billion) accounting for approximately 11.5% of Nigeria’s total imports. While auto imports recorded rapid growth between 2004 and 2014, the current slowdown in the economy and the recent introduction of high import duties on vehicles linked to the new automotive policy has led to approximately a two-third contraction in vehicle imports according to industry players. Second-hand vehicles dominate the import market. It is estimated that approximately 10% of vehicles imported to Nigeria are brand new.

With raw materials in short supply, it became necessary to make extensive substitutions of certain materials in order to maintain production. I am happy to report that our production staff were well able to cope with the situation. The aim for the future must be to obtain, train and retrain the right skills and talents while providing the environment in which the opportunity exists for management and staff to give their best performance. Government should also ensure that manufacturing industries are given a fair share of available foreign exchange for the purpose of procuring the raw materials necessary for their continued survival. These steps taken together, will safeguard employment and government revenue, and provide the necessary impetus for Nigeria's industrial expansion and self-sufficiency. There is hope that the economy may show some improvement in the future. If this happens, our renewed self-confidence as a Company will be an ideal base on which to build. It is our employees who, with their hard work over the past year, have produced the results which we now see. I am sure that you will join me in thanking them for their efforts.

To the best of our knowledge and belief. Industrialization and the use of factory, machineries, technology in the production of finished good from raw materials within necessitated period or given timeframe has increased the production output line, like all other manufacturing companies in the country. We have been struggling to sustain these factories on short-time working by eating into our stocks and utilising locally sourced materials, whenever we have expanded our distribution network with stores in new areas in order to ensure that our products are available in all parts of the Federation.
