MY TAKE AWAY from Johnny C Taylor, President, SHRM, USA in his recent presentation at CIPM special HR forum earlier this week.

1. The playing field has changed. The workers, the workplace, their expectations and needs have all changed to reflect a new era that is still evolving. The social contract has been rewritten. People had time to think and gain clarity on what they really want from life. Some of us have decided our deal breakers and are more intentional about the type of work we do and who we want to work with. The Covid-19 experience has given us clarity.

2. Africa has unique talent issues. We have a skills deficit no doubt, and we are losing our brightest to the rest of the world. However, what we lack in ready skills, we can build in the vast number of untapped talent. Africa is the only continental with majority of her workforce in their 20s. Nigeria's unemployed population is the size of the UK at 66 million. Our youth employment population is the size of Ghana at 30 million. Unlike the west, we don't have an ageing population. We are not under any pressure or obligation to extend retirement age. If anything, we should be encouraging our elderly to retire earlier and pursue new careers outside of the traditional workplace. We need to use this to our advantage. Our bain is our leverage.

3. Talent Acquisition is the most sought after role. I would extend this to talent management in general. Organisations need to rethink staffing and prioritise culture. Being clear on your culture is a strategic imperative. Culture must be clearly defined and articulated. Talent are inquisitive about culture of firms. They want to know if the culture of a firm is aligned with their values before accepting offers. People might be many but talent is scarce. Talent always have options.

4. HR professionals need to be better prepared. As CEOs are admitting that human capital is their biggest issue, there is no longer any doubt on the importance of HR. The big issue now is, are HR professionals capable? Do they have the skills to meet the demands of the new world of work?

Are they skilled in prescriptive analytics, digital transformation, law and finance? Do they know enough about the business, how it makes money or satisfies its stakeholders? The charge for HR to to upskill and in some circumstances reskill and retool to remain relevant or be extinguished by the transfer of these new key HR competencies to other functions- if HR cannot deliver.

Kudos to the CIPM President, Segun Mojeed and his team for another well organised programme.
