Can Kenya’s New AI Partnership Strengthen Data-Driven Governance?

Kenya has signed a five-year partnership with Stanford University’s Hoover Institution to strengthen the country’s capacity in artificial intelligence, data governance, digital transformation and innovation.

The agreement will support initiatives including an El Niño Impact Monitoring and Response System, a Digital Trade Readiness Index, a PPP Governance Tracker and a Sectoral Resilience Scorecard.

Can Nigeria Build Africa’s Next Silicon Valley?

President Bola Tinubu has moved Nigeria’s Digital Free Zones initiative towards implementation, directing the development of a roadmap for its full launch within 180 days.

The initiative aims to attract global investment, create digital jobs and enable Nigerian technology, finance and service companies to build, scale and serve international markets from Nigeria while retaining more of their intellectual property and economic value locally.

With Itana already licensed as Nigeria’s first Digital Free Zone and a $500 million innovation project backed by the Africa Finance Corporation, the initiative is targeting a broader ecosystem spanning regulation, taxation, banking, immigration, arbitration and digital government services.

NCC to Activate Anti-Scam Platform Next Month

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is set to activate the Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS) next month to help combat financial fraud and identity theft linked to mobile phone numbers.

TIRMS will track mobile numbers across networks, flag risky SIMs and provide real-time verification for banks and other service providers. The NCC says the system will operate within legal, privacy and data protection requirements.

Meanwhile, telecom operators have deployed 8,526 of the 12,179 additional coverage and capacity sites committed to improving network coverage and quality of service across Nigeria.

The NCC also confirmed that zero-rating of approved educational platforms and content will begin on October 1 to improve digital inclusion and access to learning resources.

FG Targets 200 New Telecom Sites Before December

The Federal Government is targeting the activation of at least 200 telecommunications towers in unconnected communities across Nigeria before December 2026.

Communications Minister Bosun Tijani said the towers are being deployed under the National Unconnected Communities Access Programme (NUCAP), which targets about 3,700 towers nationwide and could ultimately connect more than 20 million Nigerians.

The government is also exploring satellite connectivity through NIGCOMSAT for locations that cannot be reached by fibre or terrestrial telecom infrastructure, as it works to close Nigeria’s connectivity gaps.

NITDA Unveils Cloud Policy Package for Nigeria

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has unveiled a four-part cloud policy package aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s digital transformation, strengthening data sovereignty and attracting investment into digital infrastructure.

The package covers cloud computing guidelines, technical standards, digital infrastructure certification and a new investment strategy designed to support the growth of data centres and cloud services across the country.

Nigeria’s domestic cloud market is projected to grow from $1.03 billion in 2025 to $3.28 billion by 2030, with the government seeking to create a more predictable environment for investors and position the country as a major digital infrastructure hub in West Africa.
