Sometime last week, I came across some youths who were trying to record a video on their phone (a skit/music video).
I admired their confidence and creativity, but it also made me reflect on something deeper.
Since 2020, Nigeria’s content creation and influencer industry has experienced massive growth. Everywhere you look, people are creating content and building audiences.
However, because the industry is highly decentralised and easy to enter, many creators focus only on the hustle and overlook the importance of structure. If proper attention is not given, a lot of young people may spend years creating content, earning money, and staying active online without building anything sustainable underneath it.
By structure, I mean things like pensions, health insurance, savings, business registration, and proper financial planning. Many creators may eventually realise that although they had movement, visibility, and income, they never built real stability.
My advice to creators is simple: do not wait until you “blow” before you start building structure around what you do. Register your brand as a business, organise your finances, and position yourself professionally. These are the things that can give you more credibility, stronger negotiation power, and long-term security.
That is what transforms content creation from a side hustle into a profession.
