The Nicaforest High Impact Reforestation Program combines reforestation on degraded land for timber production, capture carbon dioxide and protection of natural forests. Reduced deforestation and degradation
In the Nicaforest High Impact Reforestation Program, in our pilot we have planted approximately 360,000 trees on four different farms: Amelia farm, Santa Elena farm, Rosario de Fatima farm and

Santa Maria farm.

Carbon dioxide capture and storage
The total emission reduction for year-end 2018 of the original area (four farms in the pilot) – the captured volume (ex Post) – is 45624 tCO2-e, while the estimated volume for future capture (Ex Ante) is 32460 tCO2-e.

Natural forests and biodiversity protected
Since we are planting trees on deforested land only, approximately 25-30% of the total area consists of conservation areas where natural forests are left protected. This enhances biodiversity and wildlife.

Watersheds protected
Most farms have rivers and creeks, which is very important for both biodiversity and soil preservation. To avoid any disturbances to watersheds, harvesting is avoided within 100 meters of either side of the river or creek. This will protect the natural growth close to waterways and avoid any negative effect from the planting activities.

🙌🌍 Nicaforest is now Global Goals certified by Gold Standard!
🌳 Our reforestation project Nicaforest has been certified by the Gold Standard Foundation for a long time. We are excited to announce that we have also received their Gold Standard for the Global Goals certification for contributing to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

📃🌱 The Gold Standard is a non-profit organization that was established by WWF and others to promote sustainable development and ensure the highest level of environmental integrity and positive impact. In 2017, they launched the "Gold Standard for the Global Goals certification," which holds projects to an even higher standard and requires them to quantify, certify, and maximize their contributions to achieving the SDGs.

🦋📒💼🤝 The Nicaforest reforestation project has always worked towards achieving an impact beyond carbon. Our continued efforts to ensure a sustainable future, our transparency and our promise of achieving tangible improvements in Nicaragua were crucial factors in obtaining our Global Goals certificate.

We have a track record of successfully implementing impactful initiatives that address sustainability in the three key areas: environmental, social, and economic.
We are now measuring, taking action and will be reporting on SDGs 4, 8 and 13.

🤝 Receiving the Global Gold Certificate has set a higher standard for us to uphold, and we now have an even greater obligation to our partners, investors, and clients. We invite you to join us in our efforts and to help us make a positive impact. Help us make a tangible impact that is felt. Help us make an impact that goes far, far beyond carbon mitigation.

Sustainability and privilege

🌏 It's a harsh reality that sustainability is a privilege not everyone can afford. While some of us are able to live our lives with minimal impact on the environment, we must also confront the painful truth that many people lose the ability to be sustainable through no fault of their own. They are simply left with no viable options. This injustice underscores the need for urgent action to address systemic inequalities that prevent access to sustainable practices and technologies.

Nicaragua's rural communities, particularly those in the Chontales region where the Nicaforest project is based, have shown incredible resilience in the face of economic challenges. Despite these obstacles, they have managed to develop and maintain a thriving cattle-ranging industry that serves as a vital source of income and livelihood for many 🐂 .

🔊 However, both the Nicaforest project and the people of Nicaragua recognize the importance of preserving the natural resources that sustain them and have allowed their cattle industry to thrive. Through innovative solutions and support for alternative economic activities, we can help ensure the sustainable development of these communities while safeguarding their environment.

One such alternative is our ongoing shared benefit agreement, where we lease degraded land from landowners for reforestation, helping both nature and the community. Through this initiative we have made several successful payments to local farmers, promoting inclusive and sustainable development.

NicaForest is being held accountable

🕕 Accountability matters and taking responsibility for your actions is important. Sometimes it seems we live in a world where bad faith actors can do whatever they want and never face the consequences of their actions. Well, NicaForest isn’t afraid to face the music.

😃 We’re proud to announce that our sustainable forest management project is certified under the Forest Stewardship Council™ guiding principles. They are a non-profit organization established in 1993 to promote responsible forest management worldwide. As the carbon market expands, certification standards become more crucial in ensuring accountability and meeting sustainability objectives.

📜 Organizations like The Forest Stewardship Council and Gold Standard do extensive research into projects so that you won’t have to. By choosing to support certified impact projects you can rest assured you're making an impact.

🌄 Less avoidance, more carbon removals.
Right now we’re standing at a crossroads. We can help the environment regenerate or we can keep hurting it. Through the miracle of photosynthesis, trees capture CO2 and store it, before releasing Oxygen into the atmosphere. Trees are one of our greatest allies in the battle against global warming, but they urgently need our help.

🌳 Nicaforest is committed to restore degraded land, create a thriving ecosystem and involve the local community in every step of the process. We’re verified by both the Forest Stewardship Council™ and Gold Standard and sell carbon removal credits that matter.

🏫 For many of us getting to school is a trivial task, but this is not a universal truth. For many students in Nicaragua, their school is located far from any roads and some are only accessible by horseback. You would think these conditions would discourage young learners, but if you thought that, you’d be wrong!

📚 🌱 Access to quality education - remains a core pillar toward the sustainable development of any community, and in rural Nicaragua, driving environmental awareness in young students is vital to securing a sustainable future. Our intern Hazel Salgado is an environmental engineer who graduated from UNAN Chontales and with her help, we are working on providing a quality education for Nicuaragua's future environmental professionals.

🤝 Close cooperation with rural schools in our surrounding community enables Nicaforest to conduct initiatives that foster key drivers of sustainable development for any community.

“One cannot continue thinking of agriculture, the environment, health, poverty, and hunger in isolation”
– Gilbert F. Houngbo, president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

Solving the problem of food security takes more than just providing temporary rations. According to the United Nations, more than 2 billion people around the world are affected by some level of food insecurity and we want to do our part in lowering that number.

Nicaforest has enabled local families to take matters into their own hands. By establishing the Nicaforest plantations in the region, more than 30 local families reaped the benefits of planting over 70 tons of protein-rich beans, grown locally, right there in the fertile soil of the project’s plantations.

Creating food security is part of a much bigger ecosystem. It takes the entire world working together and we will continue doing our part.

Nicaforest is happy to announce that in March earlier this year our team hosted workshops for local primary schools on the topic of food security, welcoming students from the San Jose, and Santa Teresita Schools.

Workshops were conducted in two segments, beginning with a talk on environmental awareness and educating students on how keeping school and home gardens can foster food security in their community.

This was then followed by a practical workshop in which students assisted in the planting of close to 200 fruit plants for the purpose of creating food gardens for their schools.
